Is it ok if I only get 1 year complete cover for my Dell XPS M1330 and let my insurance company cover the rest like accidental damages and stuff?
-
as long as your insurance covers it, then yes! Thats's what im doing!
-
I don't see why i wouldn't be ok if you insurrance is going to cover it. -
ok thx~ yea cuz they rang me up saying that i've bought an expensive system and asking if i want to extend my warranty

I had my current notebook replaced 4 years ago (3 months after the 1-year warranty expired) on my home insurance; the screen was misbehaving making it unusable, they tried to fix it but when they couldn't they just replaced it (with the latest equivalent model) so I just had to pay the excess amount specified on the policy. Just make sure your policy covers accidental damage to computers, electrical goods etc.

I can see a few arguments against covering the laptop through insurance.
1. Extending the coverage to include the value of the laptop could make your payments go up.
2. If you have a deductible on your policy, you'll have to pay that first if something happens to the laptop (if that is your only claim that year), therefore making you out-of-pocket for some of the replacement. If you get the coverage through Dell, there is no deductible.
3. If you make a claim--i.e., if something happens to your laptop--your insurance premium can go up: making claims makes your insurance more expensive. Not so with Dell.
4. The Dell payment is a one-time only fee, not part of a yearly payment.

i have a question
can I extend my warranty anytime during my fist year of warranty?
and how much? -
@XPSdaBest
with Dell, yes you can extend your warranty anytime of the year. you can even extend it up to 30 days after your warranty expired without having to pay any penalty on the computer.
as for how much, it really depends. if you have a next business day and complete care contract, then it will cost you more than having a return to Dell warranty. -
2. Excess is normally not that much (about £50).
3. Again, depends on your insurance policy
4. home insurance covers everything in your house, not just your laptop... -
I am not sure about USA Dell but in New Zealand a customer support told me that if i don't extend my warranty when I buy my laptop you will have to pay 2 times as much if you want to extend it later. I wonder if that holds true in the US as well?

H3rman, you sound like you've got it all figured out, so why ask the question? IMO GRPCV's advice is spot on: your rates *will* go up with a claim. In the US home owners insurance policies have a much higher deductable, typically $500 or $1000. Put a couple "trivial" claims like laptops against it and don't be surprised to see yourself dropped come renewal time.
Homeowners insurance isn't for this kind of thing.
