So I got my laptop yesterday, and the Vista Home Premium 64-bit today. I have nothing installed on my laptop, so there isn't anything to back-up.

    1) Are there any guides for upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit for the M1530?

    2) Is all the stuff that's installed on the laptop included on the discs sent by Dell? I don't want to do a fresh install and go "Oh crap, I don't have the disc for that!"

    3) Any components for which drivers don't exist that I should be aware of? Or other advice from those of you who have already done this upgrade?

    1) yes.... search?

    2) all except maybe lojack (u can download it) and drivers

    3) think all drivers can be located

Ah thank you. I have Norton, but I imagine, it's the same thing?

Also, by guide I meant a detailed step by step guide. Like "turn on computer, log on, insert install disc, restart"...I actually don't know how it's done. Do you start up with the disc inside?

just installed it on mine. Used the network drivers from the Dell website. Be sure to have them already downloaded. I'm only having problems getting my video card to work (8800GT). Anyone know where to download this driver?

-sound works straight from vista install
-bluetooth works out of the box

turn on computer.... put in CD..... boot screen should eventually say 'press any key to boot into cd' or something alogn the lines

then let vista installation load.... everything shoudl be the same as a 32bit vista installation(if uve done one before).... just follow the prompts, nothing fancy

then after all stuff is done, u log onto Vista....then u install drivers

you COULD download all the drivers before hand and store them in a jump drive...there is a point in the installation process that asks you if you have drivers to install and you can do it there and get it over with.....at least the internet connection ones that way windows update and your done (most of the M1330's where downloaded with the windows update :) )

For those wanting to experiment with 64 bit vista. 1. locate all 64 bit drivers for your hardware and burn on cd/dvd. Fingerprint scanner has to be from upek website, and you will have to purchase their 64 bit software for it to work. (14.95 usd). most of the drivers, like intel, creative, on the dell site have both and will install right one. 2.purchase a second hard drive and do a clean install on new hard drive (you will still have 32 bit on oem drive). to install, insert 64 bit disc and turn on and hit f12, to boot from dvd. install is straight forward. Have your 25 digit key available. If you are going to install media direct, you will have to put that dvd in first. i did not install media direct, I have it on oem harddrive if i ever want to use it. After install, go to device mgr and install drivers, using update driver command. I did this in july and can not foresee going back to 32 bit.

    Nope

You can get it for free Check the M1330's 64-bit install guide in the last page you can get a link to it (I just did it not 2 days ago)

I'll look for the link and edit when I find it

    So basically:

    Download Drivers
    Install Vista
    Install Media Direct
    Install Drivers
    Install Programs

Right? I see a lot of stuff on Dell's drivers website...do I need to install all of it? Or just select ones?

Hi, check out the 64 bit Vista 1330 thread that has already got a link to it two posts up. You will find all the instructions on the first page; there is also a 64 bit 1530 thread but it is much shorter, lol.

only stuff that you have... eg u wont need all the stuff from the wireless network(differnt mobile broadband cards for different countries>....)

    most basic are
    graphics drivers
    UPEK fingerprint(from here)
    touchpad drivers
    audio drivers
    webcam
memory card(should work out of box, but why not?)
    bluetooth
    network/wireless card

    optional WiFi catcher, network utility

A user has compiled a pretty thorough list of the drivers you will need. You can find them here.

upek does not supply the software to operate the fingerprint scanner anymore. you have to buy it. the driver is free. if you go to the link supplied it is now a broken link.
