I have never purchased any type of extended warranty on anything before. But, for some reason, I purchased the 3-year accidental coverage warranty on my xps m133]0. I just have to say, that I am so glad that I did.

Within a week of having my laptop, my cat knocked over a glass of water all over my keyboard. True, it was my fault for having water so close to my new toy....but, let's juts blame it on my cat :) Luckily, I was able to dry it out and haven't noticed any problem since then (1.5 months ago).

Okay...so, that was a total fluke and I don't see that happening again.

But, since then, I have almost dropped my laptop twice (once, just a few minutes ago). Both times, it got a little banged up but I was able to catch it. Again, it is totally fine...so far *fingers crossed*.

I swear, I am never this clumsy. I have never done any of these things with my other laptop (inspiron e1505), or my previous laptop (also an inspiron). My theory is that because the xps m1330 is so small and light, that I tend to handle it with just one hand...increasing the chance of dropping it.

Whatever the reason, I am glad that I got the accidental coverage warranty for the peace of mind...because apparently, I am a total clutz with my xps m1330.

Haha, or perhaps, subconsciously, you know you can get it repaired if you accidentally drop it, so you're not as careful? ;)

Peace of mind indeed... not to mention possible free upgrades towards the end of the warranty! :D

You aren't guaranteed any "free upgrades", but essentially if 2.5 years after purchasing your laptop it needs to be replaced under warranty and it's out of production, Dell will replace it with an equally spec'd machine.

I just got my m1210 replaced with an m1330 at work for this exact reason.

Oh, I see. That is pretty cool. I'll have to take note of the 2.5 to 3 year mark :)

My contact at Dell tells me that they have taken note of this upgrade scam and it is going to be difficult for genuine consumers in the years to come. It is a shame that how some people con companies and then brag about it in forums.

I wasn't planning to scam Dell. However, if something goes wrong with my laptop near that 3-year mark (or any point in the 3 years) and isn't functioning properly, then I will certainly use my warranty toward that. Isn't that the point of it?

If it is working fine, then of course I wouldn't return it for an exchange. Heck, I couldn't even bring myself to call them for a money back after they put out an $800 coupon for my exact system only 5 days after ordering.

Sucks for us Australians, as CompleteCare here doesn't cover animal-related accidents :(

(No, we don't have kangaroos running around indoors knocking glasses of water over. In fact I've never seen a kangaroo out of the zoo, so screw you!)

The saddest thing is that because of a few scammers, the genuine ones now have to explain their situation to clear their names. I just shared what I felt and it isn't directed towards anyone.

Did you read what I said? Here it is again: "...it is going to be difficult for genuine consumers in the years to come..." I wonder how Judgedee came up with the above conclusion.

You are being naive here. Ever heard of price-match or price-guarantee? Similar thing happened to me. I ordered when the instant savings was $624 but when I received the notebook, the instant savings went up to $799. I called up Dell and told them about my loss and they were happy to credit me the difference. Even otherwise, I could have just returned the notebook and reordered another but a such situation never arrived.
