Just recently I accidently ruined my computer (threw up on it in the night if you must know). The hard drive is ok but I don't know if they'll replace it anyway, if they do replace it will they copy all of the old data back on to the new one or give me back the old one too or somehting?

I'm just really worried because some of the stuff on there I don't have backed up and to get all the programs and things back would take ages, not to mention thst I don't remember a lot of the stuff I have on there and I'm OCD about having things the same as they were, so if I didn't know whether I had everything back or not then I'd freak out.

Chance u take.....if the hard drive is unharmed, you may be ok unless they right it off and just order a new and updated system.

EDIT: Actually, because of the fact that it is biological matter, they will only replace (if they do) because of the health risk to those repairing.

Take out the hard drive and clean the system up and see if you can send it in to be repaired. If you send them the hard drive with it you can almost guarantee that you will NOT get your data back. I had an E1705 that had to be repaired like this, I removed and kept the hard drive, sent it in and they replaced some parts and sent it back. (I believe it was the video card that had failed but I can't remember exactly now).

If you can possibly hook the hard drive up to another machine, then you can pull everything off of it.

If dell refuses to repair or replace it, then that's what happens, but you might as well give it a shot, worst that could happen is they say no.

Well, the hard drive works but I don't know what they will do. I was under the impression that if we took things out then it would technically mean that we aren't under the warrenty any more :S

As to how it happened, I think I got some sort of bug or something. I was using it in bed and when I went to sleep I left it on a chair next to my bed. Woke up in the middle of the night in the pitch black after very little sleep and it just kinda happened, anyway I don't really want to talk about it anymore

It was sent off today, is there any way I can call them to make sure they spare my hard drive? Would they be able to put an image of it on a new hard drive so it's eexactly the same?

When I sent in my E1705 they actually told me to remove the hard drive, so I dont know what's going to happen now.

Do you think they'd just treat my whole computer as if it were some sort of contaminated stuff then and just give me as compleetly new machine?

How well did you clean it up? I would have probably taken it completely apart and cleaned it up as much as possible to see if you can slip under the radar. If its full-bore nasty then they probably wont do anything for you unless you have the accidental damage warranty.

Yes, I was clever enough to get the accidental damage warranty. I cleaned up the insides as best I could, the hard drive looked fine and I took it out, then when I read the terms it said that the claim would be vito'd if a third party person had tried to repair it. I though that if I kept the parts out then they might count that, meaning I effectively be left with a computer that could die at any moment where none of the left hand side ports can be used.

Well, after having problems with the courier company I've been told that it's on it's way and I'm expecting to see it omorrow or the day after. Somehow the courier company managed to recieve it after being fixed and not dispatch it which I don't understand but dell has now informed me that they've got it on its way back to me.

It also sounds like they didn't compleetly replace the whole machine, I don't know for sure yet but I'll post back when I get it
