    Hi everyone,

I have a XPS 17 3D (L702X) with 8 GB RAM already on it (4GB X 2). I saw that my XPS 17 3D still has two free empty memory slots, I would like to add 8 GB (4GB x 2) to those two free slots, so that I'll have 16 GB running total.

Anyone has ever adding more RAM to XPS 17 3, Would you please recommend me which one to buy? (I don't know which one should I buy so that it'll running fine with the pre-existing 8 GB RAM).

    Thanks All.

    Lamk.

I couldn't find the RAM model number of my RAM. I've taken a picture below for you to see:

Since we have them same XPS 17 3D with same configuration. Would you please let me know your RAM model? I will look to buy the same one.

    Thanks,

    Lamk.

Remove the module and turn it around, there should be a sticker on it with the manufacturer (usually Samsung for the 4GB modules) and the model number.

Just checked one of my other L502X's modules and found the model to be M471B5273DH0-CH9

It's often not a good idea to mix RAM of different brands but if it has the same frequency, timings, and voltage, I highly doubt there will be compatibility problems.

He could have a different model for his RAM. I know the one I posted is frequently available online.

Mine is Samsung, but it's different model than the one on NewEgg. Beside, as you can see, the one on NewEgg is too expensive ($90 for 8 GB). (While I can buy G.Skill for only $55).

As you said, they are same speed, same voltage, same timing. There is highly unlikely if they'll have compatibility problem?

    Thanks.

    Lamk.

At 55$ it is still too expensive and has been as low as $43 in the last month so it would be best to wait

    @LamK

Highly unlikely, but I can't promise anything. Personally, I'd go for them cause they're so cheap.

Save your money and put it towards an SSD. The only time I've ever come close to hitting 8GB of RAM usage was working in 3ds Max with a large rendering. Just my .02. If you simply just want to have 16GB be my guest though..lol

Thanks for your recommendation, I have already placed an order on Intel 510. I was about to buy Vertex III at first, but then thanks to you guys for pointing out that Vertex III is too unreliable to go with, I decided to drop it and go with Intel, since I value my important data above everything.

It's okay, $55 is acceptable to me, at least it's $35 cheaper than Samsung memory ($90).

Thanks for your recommendation. I will go ahead and place order on that G.Skill 8 GB RAM right now. I'll update this thread about how my new RAM is doing in the XPS 17 3D later.

    Thanks ALL.

May I ask what the machine will be used for and which CPU you have? 16GB is a lot of RAM and you can do a lot with ~$40 lol.

If I had 4 slots in my XPS would I put 16GB of RAM in it? Sure...eventually but there are other things I would invest in first. Unless you're going to doing some serious 3D rendering, running AutoCad or something 8GB is more than enough. BUT if you have the extra cash? heck load it up..lol

Hey VILLOSA! sorry for the intrusion and change of Topic but I just noticed youre signature and saw you are using the crucial M4 256gb SSD..Im thinking of getting it too for my L502x that has the exact same specs as yours and was wondering if you could give me some tips regarding the Installation and general informaiton about the reliability and speed, I mean things I should keep in mind after installing it, like if I have to apply the LPM fix I have been reading about against freezes and stuff like that or if I its better to do a fresh windows 7 install direct on the ssd or clone it etc. Did you get blue blue screens? I would really appreciate your help and experience! tried to find the option for sending you a PM but I didnt find it! (guess im not allowed cause im so new here) Oh one more thing, I was also considering the vertex 3 or the Intel 510, did you consider those too?
    Thx allot ind advance!

The M4 is a great drive. Firmware 0002 means you don't need to do anything with LPM, just update the drive if yours ships with the Firmware 0001.

Crucial is one of the most reliable SSD brands and is highly recommended. Check out the M4 thread in the SSD sub-forum if you want more information. It is the fastest drive in real-world use (similar to the V3, but beats it is a lot of real tests).

Generally a fresh install is better than cloning. But you can clone if you really want to.

Intel 510 is a good drive too, but overpriced.

Vertex 3 is crap, a lot of them break. Don't get a Sandforce drive and especially not an OCZ until OCZ stops lying and screwing their customers.
