Hi guys - I'm just looking for a quick bit of advice.

I'm looking for a 17inch machine, fairly powerful for Photoshop, CAD work and some gaming. I'm not going to be trying to play Crysis at full res, but I would like a decent gaming experience. (Quake 4, Doom 3 , that sort of thing)

Money is sort of a factor - isn't it always, and I've found an outlet selling both 1710 and 1730, refurbished models.

They have a 1710, T7400 4Gb Ram 7950 GTX for £799 (which seems like a pretty good deal), OR do I hold out for a 1730 with T8300 2 x 8700M GT and look at spending over £1200?...

    Advice/comments much appreciated.

    cheers

    As am I :D

But even if I wasn't... it would still be the one I'd recommend, since " a decent gaming experience" is one of the requirements ;)

    Do you care about size/weight?

Because the 1730 is an absolute PIG compared to the 1710. Check out the dimensions and weights if you can. The 1730 also has a matching PIG of a power brick, again (if I remember correctly) the 1710's is a fair bit smaller.

I think the 1710 will handle Quake4 and Doom3 at high settings and relatively high resolution (won't be max though...) quite capably. Personally I'd pick it as I'd be embarrassed to take a 1730 anywhere.

If on the other hand you don't care about size and the laptop will spend most of its life on a desk, and want the extra power (+ want to spend the extra cash for it), the 1730 will be the go. But if you're going that route, then I'd suggest it's a bit of a waste (of aforementioned size/weight/money) unless you get the 8800 card/s. If you're just getting 8700/s, there'll be better and smaller laptops out there with a single 8800 that you'd be better off with.
