Hi thanks for any advice, I've thinking about purchasing the current SXPS 16 but had a quick question.

What is the best configuration for resolution and optical drive?

I know that you need the 1080 if you are getting blu-ray, but what if you are NOT getting blu-ray? Do you still need 1080, or will the 900 be just fine for quality?

Also does the normal DVD drive actually up-scale or is that just talk?

I kind of want the Blu-Ray, but the near 200 dollar price tag takes it out of my range.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it!

Quality of video upscaling will depend on the media player that you are using.

I think that 1080P for me was a must. It really depends on the person I think that 900P is still nice for an average user.

what kind of screen are you using now?

1080p is lovely. Not just for watching movies. But the desktop background looks amazing when set to nature scenes (after applying a proper color profile; otherwise it looks crappy). There are a ton of high-definition themes available for free that make the 1080p screen really stand out.

    Agreed..
The writing is kinda small though but windows can help you upscale it to what you need. Full HD is the way to go! :)

I'm a pretty avid gamer, and I always play at 1920x1080... the option for the better screen is cheap (as far as upgrades go for a laptop), I'd definitely go for it. As others have said, it is also fabulous for the desktop and general computer usage.

I hope not to hi-jack this thread, but I felt that this question is somewhat related to the OP's:

what program do you use to watch BluRay movies? will Windows Media Player/Media Center work? or do you need specific software for watching BD movies? i usually use WMP and VLC for all my media, so i'm wondering if i'm either of those apps will work fine.

as well, my TV at home is only 720p. through HDMI to TV, i shouldn't have any scaling issues right? this is especially if i treat the TV as the primary external monitor when hooked up

my only laptop ever is a 2006 thinkpad t60, so I have never had a good screen before. Is the 1080p a noticeable difference over 900p watching movies even if you don't have blu-ray?

Yes I also was wondering about this!
