Initally i got XPS 15 laptop with i7 740. The system was heating up on left palmrest on normal usage(web browsing, word doc and pdf) up to 97F.

Not only palmrest i could feel my key board as warm.
As i was more inclined towards having the latest and greatest computer after spending $1617.

Bought the Antec 200 Cooling pad. This cooled only the bottom but palmrest and keyboard stayed warm.

    I called dell for replacement.
    Same issue with the replacement.

Finally returned both and ordered xps 15 with i5. This runs
around 95F.Got it for $1865.(lesser configuration in processor and graphic card, no photoshop software and roxio but had to pay more, thats how dell discount works)

This 2 degrees difference feel much better on palmrest.
Also the keyboard is not warm.

Hence i5 is the way to go.

I believe you just got laptops with a bad paste job. I have a Dell XPS 15 with the i7 (740QM) 8GB RAM, nVidia 435m 2GB gfx card. Palm rest gets warm running games but but hot to the touch, keyboard never gets hot. The only place it gets hot is where the vent is pushing out the air.

the hard drive is under the left side of the palm rest, so i don't see how it could be cooler there now.

I'd second this. My 14(which supposedly runs hotter than 15) has i7 740 and 425m, under normal usage the palm rests barely gets "warm". While gaming the palm rests gets somewhat warm but well under "hot".

Core temp is usually 50~ for normal use, under 70 for game, in Celsius
