So lets talk fans... is it possible to swapped them out for something more quieter or of higher performance.. etc?

the OEM ones can't be too proprietary

This is very interesting and relevant to me. I will be monitoring this thread closely.

Sadly, I do not know of any aftermarket fans available for the xps l702x

The biggest thing would be finding a fan that fits, and is the proper voltage/amperage. Also higher performance fan would be louder...my R2 fans sometimes drives me nuts, anytime any CPU intensive tasks starts up, the CPU fan instantly kicks up (doesn't help having an i7 Extreme).

I don't feel like fan noise is a problem when I play games. I do think it will be hard finding a proper fan. A good starting point would be to analyze the standard fan and measure volt/ampere output of the motherboard.

    Bump

My fan is too loud at idle. Very annoying.

What would be good if there was fan control- the thermal trigger point setup is terrible, and there is only about 3 or 4 different speeds + OFF. Instead, I would prefer:

Fan is on all the time, but lower than the current lowest setting
Increases to medium when temps have been at 68C for at least 10 sec.
etc. & if the fan RPM levels were divided by 10, it would only change speed by one level every 10 seconds. Unless temps reached 90C where it would instantly go max (stress conditions only)

Speedfan & HWINFO don't support the fan controller on the XPS :(

Couldn't agree more, and it is actually annoying me to the point where i'm fairly likely to sell it and build a desktop PC instead with the sole intention of getting it as silent as possible. I even opened the laptop up and reapplied some thermal paste properly and, while it did lower max temps, the fan is still ridiculously loud at idle.

Interestingly, I reinstalled a totally fresh version Windows from scratch, and at some point during my installation of the dell drivers, the fan was actually behaving properly and going on for short bursts and quiet at idle. Leads me to think it's one of the drivers or a piece of software causing the problems.

The constant and relentless fan is now back in full force though.
