I stumbled across this file on Dells site. I can't seem to get it to work on my computer though. Is this for an older/different XPS model? Is it possible to get it to work with our beast at all?
-
lol no AW uses a different Setup as far as controlling the lights ETC...
Dell programs won't work on AW systems and AW programs won't control the M1730 either
its only for AW branded Systems -
See that's what I thought. Except the program is on Dells site, and it's called "AlienFX for XPS". Isn't the XPS a Dell line, not AW?
-
Are you talking about: DELL_ALIENFX_A04_R205652.EXE?
-
Yeah. It says it's for the XPS 730, I assume it can't be used with our system?
-
...lol
M1730 doesn't have anything Alien about it
Dell host the M17x drivers which has AlienFX, so that is where you are seeing that -
The designs aren't entirely different. The lighting for example is very similar. Also if you read above, the download is for the XPS 730 - which again, is an XPS. Not an Alienware.
-
the new M17x uses Dell controllers but the AW units do not
go ahead and try it on you system ..... but your keyboard only supports one color and the only thing that is simalar is the front grills but you don't have 12 colors you can turn it to
-
You're correct, I don't have 12 colors I can change my grills/touchpad to. I have 16 =-P
-
Exactly - the XPS 730 featured a different way to control the lighting. Prior to this Quickset was used - however with the XPS 730, the system uses a NVIDIA chip for this (if I remember correctly). This is what the software you mentioned is used for - to control the lighting via the NVIDIA setup (nothing to do with the GPU).

I remember seeing this when Dell posted it and of course had the "Hmmmmmm.... I wonder" thought.
-End of line- -
Darn. Reason I wanted it is that apparently it works in games too - it can control the lights with game sounds. That'd be funky =-(
-
yea it only works with AW
-
the xps 730 is a desktop no?
-
Actually, Quickset includes a component called LightFX (same as the music one). It was designed to control the lights on the XPS M1710 using inputs from games. Basically the idea was game designers could implement calls to the LightFX plugin and say you took damage from an attack the speakers grill would flash say RED.
Well, it was an interesting idea and one most of us would have enjoyed. Sadly it never really took off. If you really think about it, what real incentive did the game developers have to add extra code for the specific use on Dell systems? None. Hell, we can't even get Valve to implement a small amount of code in Left4Dead or TF2 to correctly utilize the Logitech Gaming LCD.
See the video on youtube where Patrick @ Dell XPS Gaming talks about it:

Anyway - there ya have it. A quick trip into the Wayback Machine.
If you have Quickset installed, Auto Assault would produce the same effects on the XPS M1730. http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_autoassault_home.html -
the new AW M17x actually has that feature
and 5 games currently support AlienFX, We shall see how it takes off
-
Yeah I read about that before when I was first researching the system. It's a shame really, it would make games that little bit more interesting
I love the lights on the system, but there's only so much you can do with them unfortunately. Windows 7 can't even run the lightFX music plugins properly =-(
Edit: And in response to Moo, what games currently support it? I wonder how possible it would be for someone to modify the AlienFX program to work with the M1730. Again, the systems don't seem dissimilar, apart from the obvious keyboard differences. -
It doesn't shock me that the M17x supports LightFX type calls - think about it, its Dell dude. You even have a 'Dell' folder on your C: drive.
What are the 5 games? -
^ See my previous post, posted it just before you replied. It sounds like they are indeed very similar systems...I wonder if it's possible to haxx the AlienFX stuff to work with lightFX =-P
-
you don't support the same colors in the same place.... possibly since they use similar controllers.. but it would require alot of editing.
The main thing utilized is the keyboard and yours only has 1 color, ours can be turned 4 different colors @ once or 12 solid colors
We have a member working on a Color wheel just like the one he maid for the m15x and m17x -
Would you be able to ask him how probable it would be to modify it for the M1730. Again I know you can change your keyboard, however we could still utilise the speaker/touchpad colors. What are the 5 games AlienFX supports? -
the games are not listed yet
the AW rep said right now they had 5 games but you can see in the video on youtube it working with i think dark Void or some game like that ... -
Ah okay. Let's hope AlienFX takes off better than LightFX did =-( It's an amazing system to use, such a shame nobody takes advantage of it.
