Was just reading on engadget and this article just got updated.
It's just a rumor but,so does it mean that all dell laptops with m8400/m8600 have faulty
chips except the studio series? So maybe one of the reason studio doesnt have nvidia chip
could be it?

oops, sorry.
Didnt know the topic has been created.

FWIW, the original source (theinquirer) is an anti-NVIDIA site.

I'm wondering what will happen. Class-action lawsuit? Free upgrades to the 9xxx series?
-
I am hoping for a free upgrade. Even with if we some cash back, what good is a laptop that doesn't work that you obviously paid much more than the little cash you get back for buying a damaged product.
-
Can the 9xxx series even fit on our laptops?
I really, really don't want to be stuck with a defective chip. -
The lawyers of course would net millions. -
What do you mean Nothing?
I ordered a laptop and there was nothing that said that my chip was going to be faulty. -

engagdget, gizmodo ( http://gizmodo.com/5023963/inquirer...-card-with-g84-or-g86-chipset-is-ready-to-die)
anyways, i just ordered a m1330 with 8400 (really want a graphics card).... with a 4 yr warranty and accidental damage..... hopefully they'll give me a free upgrade to montevina if my laptop craps out and i point to the increasing number of problems with 8400 cards...... -
Can you imagine what would happen if Dell announced that all 84 and 86 cards were faulty?
I don't think that their service providers could even handle that mess in replacing all of those cards. They will wait for them to fail and then deal with it. -
But no one ever gets anything much from a class action suit. I was kidding about the $1.09 earlier (that was how much Navin Johnson (Steve Martin) had to pay each customer after his Opti-Grab invention made everyone cross-eyed in The Jerk) but settlements usually pretty small by the time the they get down to the individual. I think I got $10 from the Apple Store as a result of the iPod battery suit. -

There was a class action on the Inspiron 5100 series for overheating and the defective AC plug. People are still having problems with them.
The only thing that owners got out of it was a one-year extension of the warranty.
You are right, the only ones to benefit from class action lawsuits are the lawyers.
It would be nice to see companies become more pro-active in dealing with defective parts, but it is a business decision. It is much less expensive to take care of the problems after they occur than to take care of them on the front side--even taking into consideration the litigation costs. -

I'd only expect to see Dell extend your warranty on all parts. The heat from the GPU going nuclear won't just affect the life of your GPU.
If it starts to become unusable to the extent that it could burn/scold you however, then, there's a grey area. Because they've sold you something that's dangerous. It may not be their fault but as far as a consumer is concerned their contact/contract is with Dell.
Remember the battery recall?
What are 'safe temps' for notebooks? There will likely be a threshold for the parts, and a threshold for the operator. Sans overclocking obviously which is taking it to extremes. -

What batches? What cards? What serial numbers and to which vendors?
Since not all of the cards are built equally and don't all share parts from the same process there must be a pretty vast swath of atleast a line of them sterilising semen wouldn't you think?
All NVIDIA 8400M / 8600M chips faulty??
