I have the U2715H Dell Monitor which is not 4k and the WD15 docking station. I own the XPS 15 9550 4k display laptop as well.

I've grown completely frustrated with this setup. My main issues have been the following:

    1. Multiple DPI settings do not work well in Windows 10

Since my laptop is 4K and my external monitor is not, whenever plugging the laptop into the docking station, I have to log off and log back in to enjoy the true resolution of my monitor, otherwise the text is a bit blurry and I've tried everything. I've set the DPI settings for both the laptop and monitor and nothing seems to resolve the issue.

Proposed Solution: Replace monitor with a true 4K monitor thereby ensuring both the laptop and the monitor are using the same resolution.

    2. Docking station leads to issues with some programs, namely Microsoft Outlook

I'm not sure why, but whenever I plug my laptop into the docking station to use my monitor, MS Outlook because completely useless with improper screen refreshing, text that looks horrible etc etc. I'm not sure why this is but I rely on Exchange Server and MS Outlook far too much to have to deal with this on a regular basis.

Proposed Solution: Find a better docking station.

Now, my question is which 4k monitor do you guys suggest I look into and is there an alternative thunderbolt docking station that is a worthy replacement? Do I even need a docking station? I like the idea of just plugging in one cable but since I have a wireless printer, I'm wondering if I even need the dock.

I've got the 9550 UHD, WD15 and a Dell U3011 QHD connected, no issues. Scaling 200% on the UHD, 100% on the U3011. Most contemporary programs scale fine, a few don't (like Adobe Acrobat). It is probably better to have the FHD panel and an external 4K...

I've had plenty of issues initially, freezing with just wired mouse and keyboard attached etc, but most were settled after applying a dozen updates from Dell. I had random temporary freezes if I didn't put the laptop to airplane mode, the DW1830 wifi card seemed to interfere somehow, which was reported my many, so I've replaced it with the Intel 8260. Not sure what kind of interference this would be, it might be due to improper TB3 cable&connector shielding...
Mind the WD15 is considered less troubled than the TB16... I guess you might have issues with other docks as well. 3rd-parties are coming to the market slowly (I guess they're not as stupid as Dell to sell a half-product), none will feed 130W to the 9550 over the TB3 cable because it is above standard.
You need a TB3 connected dock if you want to connect a 4K monitor decently (@60Hz). The 9550 built-in HDMI plug does 4K@30Hz.

I can't for the life of me get 4k resolution on my external monitor using the built-in HDMI plug. For some reason, the only refresh rates they provide are 59Hz and 60Hz in all of the resolution modes. What am I missing here? I just picked up another 4k monitor (HP 27" Envy) to test things out further. I've tried both connecting via WD15 dock and straight into my laptop using HDMI cable, in both instances, I cannot get the computer to provide me with the 4k resolution.

Sorry no external 4K around here to test.
