I just received a 702X...same fan issues as a lot of others.

    BUT, here's my question.

When the fan comes on and it's on low or medium speed, I also hear a fluttering kind of sound....mostly notice when the fan stops and winds down, it flutters. But, when the fan goes off and on it just is very annoying. I CAN fix it by picking up the rear of the laptop about an inch. So, when I have my laptop on my Targus Chill Mat, there is no fluttering sound since the back is up high enough.

Why would a fan make some mechanical sound when the laptop is flat on the desk but not when the rear is lifted up a little ways? I have NO desire to box it up and send it back but I will take it apart to see if there is anything rubbing, hitting the blades is people think it sounds like that is an issue.

Other than that, I lowered the max CPU to 99% and only use the Nvidia 550 for a few games...so I've controlled the fan fairly well.

Two things still bother me: 1. When the fan is going on high from games and then I stop the games and the temp goes down the fan still runs until I open up a temp reader like speedfan...then the fan stops....so weird. 2. When I have Speedfan on or some other temp software, the fan stops and starts over and over until I stop the temp software...so annoying.

I like the laptop but the fan issues are quite weird....thanks for any help on the fluttering type noise.

    Another useful post from alinad.

Actually, from what I've seen in these forums and from my own experience, the XPS 15 doesn't appear to have the temperature problems that the old SXPS 16 did. There are reports from some users of the fan either being off or very low, or on full speed, so more gradations of speed would be preferable. Some have suggested that this is less of an issue with the newer L502x than it was with the L501x.

My L502x seems fine. The fan does go to a higher speed sometimes, but even then it's not that loud, certainly quieter than my old Dell Inspiron 6000.
