By default in windows vista the (I) standby button on the start bar is set to "restart" and not shutdown (it will tell you this if you hover over it and wait for the tooltip). Are you hitting this button or do you use the ">" to select the shutdown option ?

I think I'm having similar problems. Sometimes when I close the lid it suspends and other times it reboots.

Have you messed around with the BIOS? I notice mine started doing so after I set up HD password but I had only used the laptop for 2 days at that time.

Hmmm, first thing to rule out is Vista,
So, if I where you, I would reinstall(re format) Vista.
