I haven't really had time to read the entire Official Dell Studio XPS 1640 thread, but I am hoping that perhaps anyone can help me with a few questions that may or may have not been answered already.

1.) When will the new ATI graphics card be available?

2.) When will the built in TV Tuner be available?

3.) Is 4GB DDR3 RAM good enough for the 1640 OR 6GB DDR3 RAM? I read that 6GB would be better in one of my Maximum PC magazines, but this was on a desktop, not a laptop...

4.) Will the 256GB SSD be cooler than a HDD offering and is the SSD worth it over a HDD? What brand is consistently used for the 256GB SSD in the SXPS 1640?

5.) What brand screen(s) is/are used for the RGBLED 1080p in the SXPS 1640, and have there been any problems like screen graininess, inaccurate colors, etc...?

Thanks for any help... my friend got the Best Buy SXPS 1640 and I was blown away by the whole package! I will get one, a BTO/CTO system, but need questions answered first so I can get the best system.

    Well let's see.

    1) No idea on the graphics card, but the current one is fine

    2) Same as #1, I for one see no need for a TV Tuner.

    3) 4GB seems plenty so far.

    4) The SSD makesa definite difference in both speed and heat. All Dell SSDs are Samsung, as Dell and Samsung are partners on the SSD front.

    5) No idea on the brand, but the screen is marvelous. No graininess or coloration issue I see.

    Joelist,

We have the same exact computer now (Santa Rosa Macbook Pro) and I have my XPS 16 (with the same EXACT specs) on order right now too. Supposed to be delivered Tuesday. Thought that was quite interesting though. When is yours being delivered?

Anyone else want to chime in on my original post topic? Seems it went off topic...

My answers are the same as Joe's. The RAM is definitely not an issue. I'd wait on that anyway, since, by the holidays, prices will go down drastically (if not before then). I have a 256GB SSD and the thing never gets hot...it can get mildly warm, but it's an ice cube compared to any other laptop I've ever had (I've been a laptop-only guy since '02).

I have a HP TV Tuner, but would like to upgrade that sometime, I guess. As far as the screen goes, the only complaint I have is that it seems too bright sometimes. I haven't had to adjust anything. Even the lowest setting is plenty bright for me (and it saves a good amount of battery life).

How simple is it to take out a HDD and replace it with a SDD?

Cool, thanks moose. Glad to hear that...maybe when prices go down a little bit and storage capacity goes up, I will scoop one up. They sort of look like they're going to become the new HD of choice, making the old spinners go the way of the VHS (or before too long, the DVD..).

I agree. The prices on the SSD drives are bound to come down. Until then I will be quite happy with my 500GB 7200 RPM.
