there is a winamp plugin... or if I remember well, you could enable 'global hotkeys' within winamp perferences and it works... (I think it was FlipFire, who mentioned about it long back and I followed it..)

Let me get back with that info...

    Edit: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=251404

    http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details/146178

As far as I remember, I just enabled the 'global hotkeys' from winamp > preferences and its worked great....

    Edit 2: Ahhh yess... here > http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=274163 post # 4

Would be nice if this could work for itunes as well (as much as i hate apple products and how overpriced and how sucky their product is, iTunes is the only good software by apple)

I use MPC-HC from CCCP, remote worked right after install. And global hotkeys for Winamp worked fine (had to add fast forward and rewind though)

I've used HIP to get XBMC to work with the travel remote. Perhaps it will help you too, though it's not the easiest to setup.

I created a configuration file for it and XBMC (more by trial and error than knowing what I was doing) that you can find by Googling for the following:
    "dell travel remote site:xbmc.org"

I just tested it with the touch sensitive media keys and they work as they send the same codes as the remote.

I'm not sure how it would go for controlling things in the background though.
