I'm with you. I spoke with a dell rep on the phone and told me they were available and started to configure my machine. 10 min. in, just as we were finishing, I kept asking him, "it's 1080p right?", yes, yes he told me. Then as we tried to put it through the system informed him that it was not available. After a brief discussion with his supervisor he apologized and said they were available originally, but have stopped offering them. He said that his supervisior informed him that they "were not offering it at this time".

    What does that mean?

Will they be? I can't see why not. why offer such a high res on a smaller screen like the 15", but not on the 17"?

    Anyone else?

Obviously it's due to lack of inventory. It's better to release the laptops now than to wait several weeks for more 17" 1080p panels to arrive. I think it's safe to assume we have no idea when 1080p will be available until they actually add it to the website.

    I'm waiting for a Sandy Bridge w/ 1080p :D

I really want to get the XPS 17. I think I'm going to wait a bit but not too long. I really hope they can have it available by thanksgiving or Christmas at the latest. Otherwise, I might have to get a 1080p Sony F13 or a HP Envy 3D 17 inch laptop instead.

I agree. I don't understand that at all. Quite puzzling to say the least.

I am hoping to add a 1080p display later. There are several sites that sell LCD panels for around $150-$200.

They dropped the ball bigtime. Why would anybody buy the XPS 17 with a 900p screen when there are 1080p laptops out there?

Dell told me they had no plans to get the 1080 on the XPS17 for at least 6 months!

That's just terrible on Dells part. Why would anyone consider buying the XPS 17 when it has no 1080p? It makes it way overpriced and it doesn't have the higher screen resolution which many similar 17+ inch laptops like Sony and HP already have!!!

Who said that, a sales rep? I'm sure that is their scare tactic to convince you to buy now. I highly doubt the XPS 17 will only have a 900p screen for six more months.

I expect you are right there..just so annoying for for me as I needed that laptop like yesterday lol so have put up with the screen. Its the poor angle of view and distortion that it brings, that can really be annoying I find. otherwise it is an awesome laptop

can anyone explain to me why they wouldn't offer 1080p? i mean i can see NO logical reason not to offer it. it doesn't have to come as standard, and they can just pass the costs of such an upgrade on to the buyer that chooses it. but to not offer it on a supposedly premium 17" laptop just seems absurd to me.

could someone help me understand dell's logic on this one?

It's especially confusing considering that Dell had already been selling a 17" 1080p B+RG display with the Studio 17. All they'd have to do is take the same panel they already had and stick it in the new XPS.
