    Hi Friends

if anyone owns a refrub SXPS16 please share your laptop pics here (specially pointing to the problem). I'm curious to know whats the external/outer body difference between the refrub and new SXPS as Dell guaranty the internal h/w performance.

I got my wife a refurb SXPS16 and honestly its in better condition than my purchased new SXPS13. The only way you would know that it was a refurb is because of the big red sticker on the bottom.

I own a refurb SXPS 16... the new machines look the exact same, they aren't a different design.

Here is a link to some pictures of mine... They look the same as every other.

this is kind of a weird question, as if you get a refurb 1640, its going to look like a 1640.

If it has a scratch or a scuff on the lid though I'm not sure if dell replaces that before shipping it out or what.

If it has a scratch, it will be listed as 'scratch and dent'.

Usually even the scratch and dents look new, the last scratch and dent I got had a bunch of fingerprints and that was it.

Thank you for your pics. Could not make any difference virtually. Then, Why Dell is NOT selling those as branded laptops to new customers, if they looks same and difficult to find any difference??? Above all Dell is a business oriented company not a charity organization  If I would ve such business I would ve sell them as new :p

Its against the law to do that. If a product is taken out of the package or already configured to be shipped but is cancelled, FEDERAL LAW mandates that it be labelled as redistributed, refurbished, or otherwise not-new. Hence, their sale value drops dramatically, when practically nothing has changed. Thats why the Outlet is considered to be the best place to get a cheaper deal.

Yep. I bought one myself today with a 20% off coupon someone on the forums kindly sent me.

Thanks to that 20% off coupon I am the proud new owner of a refurb Studio XPS 16 with the HD 4670, an RGBLED screen(!!!!!) and bluray player, P7530, 4 gigs ram, 500 GB 7200 rpm HD, bluetooth.... $807 after discount, cost me $873 total including tax and free 1 day air shipping.

Needless to say I am pleased :)

My family wondered at my choice to get a refurbished but honestly, as people have posted in the thread, there is no difference from "new" built to order laptops. Scratched/dented ones would be marked as such. :)

don't worry about the refurb tag. if there is any big scratch or dent, u can always call up dell and explain to them and, generally, they will help u out.

Let me share the culmination of years of experience with buying literally thousands of units from the Dell Outlet.

First, it truly is luck-of-the-draw when it comes to the condition of a PC from the Outlet. Given my experience, you generally will get a like new system when you purchase a Certified Refubished item, and you will generally get something with mild scratches if you buy a Scratch and Dent. Nothing is guaranteed. Recent changes to Dell's policies makes it VERY HARD to return/exchange an Outlet unit due to cosmetic reasons. Gone is the Dell 21-day Satifaction Guarantee, and in it's place is a 21-day return policy with restocking fees, etc.

In a nutshell, Dell does not guarantee that a Certified Refurbished (CR) unit have no scratches. In fact, "blemishes" are part of the description of what a CR unit is. A Scratch & Dent (SD) is guaranteed not to have any scratches or pits on the LCD, but that is about it.

I have bought plenty of SD's that came LIKE BRAND NEW with no scratches anywhere, and I have also received CR's that a blind person obviously QA'd, as the condition was beyond a SD!

I recently received an SXPS 16 (CR) that had the top lid all scratched up like it had been run over sandpaper, and the LCD glass/plastic was scratched and pitted. That was my saving grace...without the LCD being marred, I probably couldn't have returned it without a restocking fee. It was also purchased days before the current 20% off coupon, so I was happy to return it and instead had purchased it's replacement (another SXPS 16 with 8GB RAM and a 1GB ATI 4670) and mentioned that to the Dell rep when I requested a return. They asked for the new order number (to confirm that I had, in fact, ordered another), and they happily gave me a case number and prepaid lables to ship it back.

So, despite what people here say will happen based on their individual/one-time experience, there really aren't any guarantees on the quality of a received Outlet item, unless you purchase Previously Ordered New, in which case, you are almost guaranteed a new unit.

All-in-all, the savings from the Outlet far outweigh any inconveniences caused by the very small chance of receiving something that is of poor cosmetic appearance.

WOH ! Great review. I was tempting for the refurb SXPS16 to save extra $. As most of the time my luck does not helps me, I would have ended in a #$%^ deal

Some people are just too superstitious... oh well, spend more money on it new, and when you return it because it was shipped with the wrong configuration, I'll be sitting around waiting to buy it off the Outlet for half the price :)

Totally agree with you Tex have a refurb and a new SXPS 16 and the new one is giving me problems, but when i did receive my refurb it was in horrendous shape (key's on the keyboard dislodging, crazy heat issues, some sticky substance on the screen, and an ac adapter that was touchy) after all the repairs and an undervolt its absolutely amazing.

Yah RmClock undervolt on both first test i dropped from 1.1 volts to 1.00 volts then proceeded on down to .975 volts which i could bring down to .950 volts on my T9900 but on my T9800 i went down from 1.275 to 1.150 but this is the most stable for sure.. heat reduction in both was drastic on my t9900 i went from 87'c to 63'c and on my t9800 i went from 97'c to 65'c

I assume those quoted temps were with PRIME95 or ORTHO running? So far, I have RMCLOCK running and am experimenting with settings.

    Thanks!
