I figured out how to disable the touchpad, but are there any keyboard commands or the like to toggle it on/off without having to go into that menu and do it manually?

Hit Fn key and then F3. This will enable/disable the touchpad. You can tell if the touchpad is on or off by the light above it. If it's off, the touchpad is on. If it's on, touchpad off.

Does the synaptics software still support automatic touchpad off when an external mouse is connected? I could not find any option in the software. This was however possible on my 1520.
