was wondering if anyone else had fallen into this situation:

Back in October of 2004 I went back to school to get a degree in computer networking. My instructor recommended a Dell laptop, so I ordered a Dell XPS gen 1. I also purchased the 4 year warranty with accidental damage and in home service. Over the first year I went thru a couple of ac adapters, video cards etc. In 2007 Dell replaced my Gen 1 XPS with a gen II m1710. In 2008 just before my warranty expired I needed another ac adapter, and the Dell agent asked me if I wanted to extend my warranty for another year for 300.00 ofcourse I paid it and it's a good thing I did because my 1710 died in early 2009. I recieved the XPS M1730 as replacement, in August of 2009 another Dell representative contacted me and asked if I would be interested in extending my warranty until 2013, for 550.00. At this point it was a no brainer and I arranged to have her call me back in a couple of weeks to pay for it. I think it was about a week after I made my payment yet another Dell representative contacted me and told me that the max warranty was five years and I had already passed that.

I told him I was aware of this and had asked the previous agent about that and she had stated it would go thru. I also told him that I made my payment in good faith and fully expected his company to to honor that warranty. He asked if he could call me back in a few days since he needed to look into it deeper. When he called me back he stated that the agent did offer me the warranty even though she shouldn't have and that Dell would hold to the terms of that warranty.

Today I have a broken M1730, and I am awaiting delivery of an Alienware M17x that has full warranty until 2013, nine years of warranty for about 1000.00

Well, I've owned two Dell laptops. XPS gen 1 m1330 and a very old Inspiron 15inch many years ago.

Something I noticed in your post is that your laptop seems to be breaking down a lot ?
My Inspiron laptop lasted me 4 years without any issues.
My XPS M1330 went through one motherboard swap because soldered GPU failed. That was like a year ago though.

I wonder what's making your laptop break down so much.

Well there was this time at band camp.....

One day my kid knocked it off the couch and broke the screen.

I was actually referring to the fact that I am getting 9 years of extended warranty on my laptop
