I am deciding whether to buy the studio xps 16 or studio 14z. Currently, I am using macbook pro 15 inch. So comparing mbp 15 to xps 16, which one would be heavier and harder to carry around. Or should i just go with 14z... thanks for all the comment

I got the XPS 16 because I mostly use it as a desktop replacement and only occasionally move it. If mobility is important I'd recommend getting something more portable.

I carry it around everywhere and bring it to school.

But I'm just insane like that. It's not *very* portable. Definitely doable if you have good posture.

It's not bad at all. I lugged a 10lb Asus around for 2 years though so this is a big improvement.

My wife as a XPS 13 1340 that is really really nice. It only weighs about 1.5lbs less then the XPS 16 1645, but the size of it makes it very portable.

the xps 1640 isnt really "portable" but it offers i7 processor which is Great!

If you want mobility, you can grab xps 1340 with 2.6processor and nvidia sli graphic option which is very similar to MBP 9400m+ 9600GT.... only its gona be 9400M+ 210M.... the xps1340 is very light 4.8 lbs 13 inches.. it looks just like xps1640 but I personally think it looks even better than 16 inch model because it lacks those big speakers on the side...

so with xps1340 you can get good performance and good mobility if you dont mind 13inch screen.

but it you want a 15inch powerful and very light notebook... look up hp envy 15, it looks just like macbook without edge to edge screen and carries i7 with 1gb 4850 ati card. and is only 5.1lbs

I carry around my XPS 1640 to class all the time, I have a Jansport backpack to fit a 17", so I just put my XPS in the microfiber covering Dell provided, slip it in, take it out, etc. Weight/bulkiness doesn't seem to be an issue for me (and that's with my 9-cell battery on it!). (granted, it's probably not as "portable" as a 14z, probably lol...)

I carry my M1730 around in a backpack all the time, I don't find it too heavy, so you should be OK if you get a decent backpack/bag for it. :)

It certainly is NOT a pleasure to carry it aroung. It's more like a desktop replacement.

I can compare it to my D630, which is very portable and easy to carry around. The XPS 16 is not.

I am a full-time student and my Studio XPS 16 never leaves my side. I have no problem carrying it around or using it where ever I need it. I would go with the XPS if you need the power and the awesome screen but for smaller I would recommend the Studio XPS 13.

Everyone's idea of portability will differ. I carry my Acer (7.5+lbs) around to class everyday and while I wish it were lighter (who doesn't wish their laptop be lighter?), I wouldn't sacrifice it for a smaller screen. I don't mind the weight most of the time, but I've heard a lot of complains from other students carrying their smaller and lighter laptop around...

Thats very true. I think its what you do with the laptop. When i first got to college i had a huge hp with a p4. worked great was nice, i thought id get a smaller one for portability.

Then jr to sr year in engineering i start using things like matlab and solidworks. which the laptop did fine with, but really had you wishing for bigger screen/ keyboard etc.

Now going through my masters, doing dynamics simulations etc where im glued to my desktop what feels like 24/7. At least with the studio xps 16 ill be able to go to my gf's house and campus while continuing the work. Even if its was as heavy as the monster hp i once had, itll be nice to have a full size everything.

couldnt be as bad as the 1730, which i carry all the time. its the power brick that kills me though. the 1640 is lighter and the adapter is much lighter, even if you use a pa13 130 watt brick it is lighter. to me it will be no problem but i guess it completely depends on your physical strength and stamina
