Well dell came out and once again replaced the mobo today... making this the 3rd time this computer needed servicing... and to my surprise while test driving it today (after the guy left), the computer shut down after reaching over 100c on the ACPI temps...

funny thing is, i didnt smell anything burn, there was no heat at all, and everything seemed fine... i unseated the heatsink and tried it again, sure enouh the same thing happened. the fan maxes out as soon as i start the PC, when it loads windows... then once i get there, it completely stops... i mean the fan blade arent turning!

It seems that randomly, the temperatures flucutate by big marigins. it goes from 60c to 80+ in a heart beat, then down to 40 where the fan completely stopped spinning, the back upto the 100's again while gaming... yet when I put my hand on the bottom, there is no heat. if you check out the enclosed pic, you can see that the ACPI maxed out at 110c but everything else is very low....

anyone have issues with the built in thermostat before? or know if this is a software issue or if i need another motherboard? AGAIN....

anyone know what or where the temperature diode/thermostat is on the motherboard for the ACPI?

funny thing is, the dell repair guy did not replace the old thermal pad over the ACPI.... and when the heatsink was taken out, i can see the old impression that the ACPI chip's die made. This morning running the computer, the ACPI has not overheated at all..

do these thermal pads have to be "cured" before they melt and make full contact??

At least if you have had three attempts to fix it you can demand a new machine ;)
