Hey everyone,
First post hereWanted to first say thanks to all the m1330 users, your posts were REALLY helpful in figuring out what combination to get.
So, I bought an m1330 10 days ago. Great machine. But, it has the whine. And it's too much for my work-in-silence ears.
I've speant hours reading about the whine issue here and elsewhere on the net. I am aware of the cause and the "solutions".
So, my question is...
Is there anyone with an m1330 that does NOT have the whine? Like, straight out of the box, and months later still, no problems and you never had to install RMclock or any other tweak.
The reason I ask is I'd like to send this back and get a replacement (I'm still within 21 days), but I've read about a number of people doing that and getting 2 or 3 replacements that also have the whine. I'm wondering if I should just return it for a full refund and buy something else. I would love for the m1330 to work, it really is my #1 choice, but I deffinitely can't work with the noise and I would be willing to get an inferior laptop that is whine-less.
However, if anyone has an unaltered m1330 that does NOT whine, please do tell! I'd really like to know if getting a replacement is potentially worth the effort.
Zack

I have had my m1330 for over a month now. No tweakes, no whine at all
only vibration of machines while typing, etc. -
I've had my personal m1330 for 8 months now, and my work m1330 for about 2. Neither had, or have developed whine.
-
I've had mine for about a month, and no whine here.
-
I have the whine and RMClock fixed it for me
-
Just curious, where is the whine coming from? Is the hard drive spindle or CPU cooling mechanism? For a machine as sleek and portable as the M1330, I'd be willing to replace the hard drive if that's the problem.
-
Mine is 2 weeks old and going on 3 weeks this wensday and haven't had the CPU whine or any of the other common problems on it yet either, NOW (Nock On Wood) LOL!
-
I've had my M1330 since December '07 and have not had any cpu whine. I do have the occasional HDD clicking noise though.
-
Had mine for a week. No whine you've mentioned. I think theres a slight electric current on the palm rest on mine which don't really bother me...
-
I've had my M1330 for over a month. No CPU whine.

-

I've had mines for about a month now, and I too have the whine. It get especially loud when it's not plugged in. I'm curious as to what RMClock does exactly. Does it do anything to the CPU to get it to shut up.
Good grief, if my 1330 was a human girlfriend, I would have dumped her for whining so much. Oh well. -
I'm not a electrician. But according to my knowledge, it seems to be the noises of electrical circuits rather than CPU.
BTW, I read somewhere saying that updating the BIOS can solve the whine. It's also said to be a problem of A07 version BIOS. I'm not sure. -
Had mine about a week. Pretty much silent, even without an SSD.
-
i'm starting to think those who said they do not have the whine might be because their ears are not as sensitive as some of ours.
I'm sure my ear works a whole lot different than my 90yr old grand pa.. -
No whine. Only time I hear a slight whine when its running on batteries with less than 30% charge.
-
I've sold my M1330 (and ordered an M1530 instead), and by M1330 did not have whine.
-
Well I dont get the wine and I am sure its not my hearing. I am 22 so I dont have grandpa hearing... also my bios is A09
-
No whine here
-
Thanks msjaneoly! Anyone else out there have a good experience?...
-
Wow! cool! lots of replys. Thanks everyone... BTW, I tried RMclock, but it hasn't fixed the problem. I followed a tutorial that was for a different notebook. Is there a RMclock tutorial for the m1330?

So, just an update... I sent it back to Dell before my 21 days were up. Going to get a refund, and then re-order a new one in a few weeks. Hopefully the next one won't have the whine. I'll post here later with an update.
-
No whine here. Owned since August.
-
Mine only really whines when I'm on lowish battery and it's unplugged. Most of the time it's alright though.
-
Here's an update... so I sent the old whineing m1330 back. Then I orderd a new one, which arrived a few days ago. I am happy to say that this one sounds much better!
On startup, the hard drive was a bit noisy for the first hour, but now that I've set everything up and been using it for a few days it sounds normal.
As for the whine, I would say there is a TINY bit of noise, similar to the problem I had before, but it is much less and totally usable. Most of the time I don't hear it unless I put my ear close to the front of the machine. With the previous machine I could hear the whine from across the room! As long as no greater noise develops I'll be able to keep this one. So far so good.
I'm really glad I didn't settle with the last one. Happy I sent it back cause this new one is really much better
One thing I should note, this new m1330 has the
Intel® Core 2 Duo T5550 (2MB cache/1.83GHz/667Mhz FSB)
whereas the first one I ordered had the 1.66 GHz processor. I don't know if that is what made the difference with the whine, but whatever it is this one sounds better! -
I also have the T5550 CPU, no whine and on AC most of the time. The M1330 is the most silent and least heat laptop I have ever owned (at leat 10 laptops).
-
I have the T7500 core 2 duo and DID have whine on mine, i followed a suggestion on the internet about turning off the power saving feature of my bluetooth module and the whine completely disappeared for me. It wasn't a huge deal for me because i use a bluetooth mouse as well as bluetooth headphones so having the power save turned off actually gained me some performance with those 2 things.
-
I'm yet to meet an M1330 owner who doesn't whine.
-
I got mine in February and it does have whine although I got used to it.. However, recently it's got *alot* worse - a real loud oscillating noise that really grates..
I've gone back to RMClock but it turns my laptop into a furnace..Both palmrests super hot as well as the trackpad..
Might try a bios upgrade but I imagine this is purely h/w related and can't be fixed that easily.. Other than that I love the laptop.. It's brilliant.
Anyone have an m1330 that does NOT whine?
