Okay so I paid a premium on my studio xps 16 to get the 256GB SSD hard drive but WOWWWWWWWWWW was it worth it. Programs open INSTANTLY, bootup is extremely fast, and the computer stays significantly cooler. This is the best computer experience I've ever had and it's mainly due to the SSD hard drive.

You think that one is quick, give an SLC drive a try (or one of OCZ's Vertex MLC drives).

I'm 100% with you though, I'd not buy another system without an SSD (desktop either).

And this is why I can never own an SSD. I will waste all of my money on an awesome SSD setup.

I have one of the crappier SSDs on my EEE PC and it still amazes me how fast it boots and loads. I'm waiting for the prices to drop so I can buy a nicely sized laptop SSD for my XPS.

Do it differently: Instead of planning for a new notebook in one year, get an ssd in half a year. Same amount of money-per-month spend, sort of, and you get more than you would get out of a new notebook anyways.

SSDs are expensive. until the moment you realize what you get out of it: something worthing more than a new high end ultra expensive notebook.

Haha, you wouldn't want to waste the money on an SSD for any of my laptops.
    They're all 6-10 years old.

I mean more for my desktop anyway.

Probably a stupid question, but is the interface for SSD the same as a regular hard drive? So once they drop in price could I swap out my 500GB 7200k for an SSD on my sxps 16 w/out any other changes? Thanks!

Yep, SSDs are available in both PATA and SATA flavors. You would just need to get a SATA one for your computer, otherwise it'll pretty much be a drop in.

Sweet! Thanks for the quick reply! Haven't even opened my box yet (refurb sxps 16, delivered this morning) and already time to watch prices for upgrades :)

The prices don't seem to be going down as quickly as they used to...

Yup, ive been using a 32GB SSD on VAIO TZ for the past 1.5 years. Its incredible the performance between mine and a friends; the config is the same except for the SSD vs HDD. Its a HUGE performance gain for ultraportables/netbooks considering that most use the PATA interface (ie. pata was designed for consumer electronics, not laptops).

Now, im on the sxps16 with the 256SSD, and WOW.. start ups are incredible.. AND, it shuts down in literally 5 seconds if you have nothing running.
