No, I dont regret. So far I just had the throttling issue and the sound issue. Throttling is 99% fixed and audio needs a driver update. Otherwise the system is rock solid and so much beautiful!!

I traded up from a MacBook Pro 2.53 for an XPS 1645. Do NOT regret the decision.

Nope, I definitely don't regret my decision.

IMHO all manufacturers have their issues. Some more than others. I think that they all have really good warranties, and should be able to resolve your issues. If anything, there is always Ebay :)

    Good Luck.

I absolutely loved my XPS Studio 16 1645 when it first arrived. So cool, so fast. But after it was loaded with software and I began using it 12 hours per day, the heat caused the keyboard and the touchpad to go out. It was down 10 days, and I was barely able to return it. Close call.

The Studio XPS has had the same problems since it came out, but Dell makes model changes, but no design changes. When you open the lid, it blocks the cooling air flow. Duh?

The problem is finding a hot rod that doesn't have problems. A new generation of processors come out and gig video cards are suddeny the norm, and everyone rushes out to market with ill-designed and untested products. We are the guinea pigs of their beta products, all of which seem to have heating, throttling, or video problems. It is all important to get something out to market quick, and not right.

I am not sold on Apple. If anyone knows of a hot rod computer that is out of beta and ready for prime time, please let me know. I am looking hard.

So, based on what you stated I am certain to have problems with my XPS 1647 at some point? I ordered mine with the i5-540 processor and 256GB SSD. Should I just return it before even getting started with it?

I think you were smart to get the i5 processor and the SSD to help reduce heat. If you don't use your computer 12-15 hours per day, or play lots of games, you may not have bad heat problems, which show up by disabling keyboard keys and making the touch pad unresponsive. Keep in mind that you only have 21 days from date of invoice to return the unit, so don't let time get away from you.

Date of invoice? Meaning the date I was billed for the system not the day it went into production, right?

That is correct, 21 days from invoice, not delvery. I read in a previous forum post about a 30 day return period, so they have tightened. It is so strict that when I purchased my XPS, I got two extra adapters, for travel and an extra room. The computer did not come till 10 days later, and then they sent me a 120 watt charger for the 90 watt charger after my problems began because the 90 watt charger was under-powered. When I called up to return the two 90 watt adapters that don't work for the Studio XPS, they refused to take them back, because the invoice was over 21 days. DELL WANTS TO SHOVE STUFF DOWN YOUR THROAT THAT YOU CAN'T USE, THAT IS THEIR FAULT. IT IS OUTRAGEOUS! I had been working with Dell on the heat issues, and they had failed to send out someone on their 24 hour service contract for 9 days, so I decided then and there to quit working with them and return it right away. Do not work with them past 21 days, return it. Dell will screw you, and blame it on you for the late return.
BTW, when I called for service, they informed me that their warranty is for hardware only, not software. Even if heat causes your software to crash. They told me I had to buy a software guarantee, which was not even on their web site when I purchased the computer. No matter, I must buy. I now see that they have a ONE YEAR software warranty on their web site, which means that you are going to get screwed on the software issues caused by their drivers, and their heat issues. All other manufacturer warranties that I know of are all inclusive. Dell has their service department push software warranties on you, software, extended warranties, accidental damage, online Windows 7 training. Technical support is now into after market sales. I will never buy from Dell again. EVER. They told me I had to buy Windows Ultimate to make the XPS run right, and they later admitted it was due to their wanting you to use Windows drivers instead of their own. Another $300 software after market sale (Ultimate is not even an option when you buy it), after the $250 after market software warranty not listed on their site, all needed due to solve my heat issues. I hate how Dell runs their business, how they make defective products and knowingly sell them to you, misrepresent the true cost of what the computer is going to cost, push after market sales when you have problems, have strict return policies, even when they sell you a part that they know they just recalled as being underpowered. The best thing that happened was when the rep refused to take back the two chargers, because I immediately returned the computer (and both chargers). Thank god.
Honestly, I would just refuse delivery, and not bother dealing with all the stuff you have to deal with, one screwy outrageous thing after another. Dell is not customer oriented, just profit oriented. If nothing else, just BEWARE OF 21 DAYS AFTER INVOICE; DO NOT WORK WITH THEM, RETURN IT.

I really felt bad for the inconvenience you faced with dell :(. I will recommend you to send a feedback to Bill. He will forward it to the Concerned Dept. Its not dell who is not customer oriented, its their untrained XPS reps who arnt customer oriented.

    Good post.

I think many of us are in the same position when it comes to deciding what laptop to buy. You read reviews and find out what other people's experiences are of these things. It's incredible. There are some things that are so fundamental to the laptop and yet manufacturers fail to get it right. You wonder if they actually test these things.

I have a 1340, and I really dig the 16, and yes, the overall power packed behind the 16 is right on but compared to the quality of the Macbook Pro? No wayyy! The Mac is a more thoughtfull design, less pieces to flex around, the screen is sealed with a press in gasket, not a sheet of low grade polycarb glued on, and the base is a single piece of aluminum. If dell put the design efforts in that mac did then this forum would not exist because we would have nothing left to complain about!

no way. I love my 1640, and with Win7, this baby is the fastest thing I've ever run. it has pretty much all the features I'm looking for.
