Anyone successfully requested 32 -> 64 bit after sale swap from Dell?

I purchased a Studio XPS 13 from the outlet and had no choice of OS.

32-bit isn't addressing enough of my RAM and I thought requesting 64 bit backup media from Dell wouldn't be too much of a problem since I have a valid OEM licence and I understand that they're interchangeable.

I feel a sense of entitlement to this because at no stage during the sales process are you made aware of the way shared gfx work on the XPS - the result is only roughly 2 GB RAM available to the OS, hardly acceptable when you purchase 4GB. In theory without the shared gfx, 32 bit should be able to address most of the RAM.

Dell are being really unhelpful though, claiming they have no media in stock etc etc.

I was just wondering whether anyone has managed to actually do this? I just need Dell to send me a 64-bit backup disc.

    Thanks.

Try Dell XPS chat....tell them how much you like your lappy, how you like Dells service, and ask them if they would kindly send you out a 64bit disk.

They have done this for several forum members before ;)

It was easy for me to get 64 bit Vista Ultimate through the online chat. I think Dell is obligated to provide 64 bit versions of Vista to someone who has purchased a system with 32 bit. Not sure if that applies to XP 64.

I just used the XPS online chat and asked them for a 64-bit disk. They sent it to me (Next business day even!, although they said it would take like 3-5 business days or whatever) without any questions. ;)

You can also order the media from Microsoft, like $10-12 I think.

But, if you have access to a Retail copy of windows or Anytime Upgrade Disc, you can use that, just use your OEM key. I've done this many times for clean installs.

Dell will send you a 64-bit install disc. Your Microsoft license entitles you to the 32-bit & 64-bit version of Vista. Dell has honored these requests in the past and if you do a fourm search here you'll find multiple threads on who to contact to make this happen.

They send them out next day. You wont pay anything.

Hit up this link and then contact one of the Dell peeps there - Jesse or Chris_M. They should be able to assist.

Thanks for the links. Looks like lots of people have received the disk without problems.

I spoke to tech support for over an hour and had my call escalated twice until I reached customer relations and they refused to budge. They were adamant that Dell doesn't even sell 64 bit Home Premium which is, of course, simply false.

This is kind of surprising given how many people have successfully done this. My system was purchased in the UK rather than the US and now I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

I'm not sure who to contact now. The last Dell rep I spoke to claimed to be the last rung on the tech support ladder. I didn't care too much about getting the OS but I feel like pressing the matter now that they're being such b*stards about it.

If you think that's bad, I called up Dell China last week because my media buttons were causing my laptop to freeze, the guy knows I've got 64bit Windows, then told me Dell doesn't support 64bit Windows (Vista this is). I then say the drivers are on your site, on the CD that comes with the computer, and he was like "Oh they are for testing only". I was like ...
