Do we think dell would do a refresh later this year? What do you think they could do instead.
Mod Edit: New XPS 13 Kaby Lake Released Thread

Certainly think they are done with the screen size - I mean it's gotten to the point where they've just about made it as small as it possibly could be. Any smaller and you're sacrificing too many hardware components.
They could definitely do away with the camera (being at the bottom, what a terrible idea). I wish they would have had more options - i.e. a 1080p, 16 GB, 1 TB SSD version. I do not particularly fancy the QHD because of the fact that 4K just doesn't scale all to well at the moment with Windows 10 (Windows in general).
Personally they could have had a little hinge or some easier way of opening up the laptop like they do with the MBP. Overall I see them making a new XPS rather than a 2nd refresh. Perhaps a bezel-less display?Last edited: Apr 7, 2016 -
On the form factor side, IMO things will stay the same for 3 or 4 years, maybe more...
On the hardware side, there are a lot of probability to see the new Intel Cpu's like KabyLake (H1 2017) and CannonLake (H1 2018) in the XPS. On the GPU side, same story, Nvidia just announced the Pascal arch, so it's probable to see new GPU configurations inside the same form factor. Same for SSD's, Samsung just announced the new SM961 and the PM961 drives for H1 2017, which feature impressive performances, so it's possible to see them in our XPS.
One more thing, 3dXPoint is coming with cannonlake
Personally, like @C64 , I really hope to see a real bezel-less display, without this large bottom bezel, and an additional webcam, but I think they will never do such a thing... -
Great to have found this thread as I was wondering the same thing about when there would be a refresh....
As for the camera location, we can't really put too much blame on Dell for putting the camera at the bottom, due to the infinityedge display. Personally, I don't use the cam much, if at all, so I favor the location to achieve the thin bezel.
The only gripe that I have about the XPS (although I have the i7 models, one of which is maxed out), is the weak 960M GPU. Now, I know this isn't a gaming laptop, that's not what I am expecting (obviously), however, at least a 970M would have been more practical IMO to put this into the Razer Core gaming laptop territory, which would be amazing considering that the XPS is not a gaming laptop. The 960M is really a, "why bother," GPU even for the average task. At least they should have offered an option with the 970M...
I am too looking forward to the CPU and GPU upgrades. (Pascal will surely solve the issue of the weak 960M)...
Do you foresee a refresh by the end of this year? Or perhaps the first quarter of 2017? Thoughts?.... -
I haven't hear of any news about refresh or new XPS. The current design is perfect, slim, and light. They probably won't change too much cosmetically. However, I would love it if the new XPS 15 have two USB-C ports, one on each side, as I can see USB-C getting into the market even more in 2017. Definitely see newer hardware such as CPU & GPU. Magnetic charging port please (too bad Apple patented the idea)!

I like these Dell XPS 15 laptops and I like most of the improvements suggested above, but I would like to see an Intel RealSense 3D camera included to make these laptops compliant with the Windows 10 - 'Hello' security feature. The present webcam is all but useless but I want to be able to use the 'Hello' feature to perform secure logon's into Windows 10. My only other request is to have the option of a full QWERTY keyboard with a dedicated keypad on the right like all the ASUS keyboards on their 15.6" laptops.
Dell's new Inspiron 7000 range aren't bad but I don't like their 'duo-core' CPU's. If they had a quad-core i7 Skylake processor they would be quite good, but the Inspiron range seems the cheap cousin to the XPS range. I'm hoping Dell will tweak their XPS range with a Windows 10 - 'Hello' compliant camera at the very least, and soon (in July 2016)... -
An XPS 13 with no coil noise (mandatory), no fluctuating brightness, new gen cpu's etc, a FHD model with 16GB RAM (dont like the glare). Te be honest I dont use SD card slots anymore, so for me it could go for something else, but I guess its cheap / almost free for them.
More reliable restarts, it halts for me sometimes. The design is very good, but some tweaks could always be done, some more color variations?, slightly less sharper edges of the lid? as in not cutting yourself.
Wifi card and SSD I will replace myself anyways unless they put in an Intel card and a Samsung SM951 class SSD. I guess I would use the SM961 next time myself.
Asus is delivering a mini USB-C dock with their new Zenbook, so could Dell. The Zenbook sure looks stunning / better?, although with a slight bigger bezel. -
Wish they would give the XPS 15 a full size keyboard.

Here is my wishlist:
- Find some way to have the camera in a decent location, with Windows Hello
- Fingerprint scanner if Windows Hello not available
- Ability to open the laptop lid as easily as a MacBook
- Bottom of laptop more flat/flush with no exhaust, making it more friendly to put on lap.
- Dynamic Contrast fix @ XPS 13 FHD
- CPU's with GPU's Intel 550 @ XPS 13 and Intel 580 @ XPS 15.
- Larger battery (perhaps remove ports which are not required as much by people)
- A better keyboard, current one is awfulJoe Random and ghegde like this. -

My Suggestions are
1) Fingerprint Scanner with windows hello -- ( combine the power button and the fingerprint scanner using .. a larger diameter power button and the new one touch reader style like the latest iPhones and Androids).
2) On the XPS 15 slightly larger keys on the keyboard and generally better key travel i would say 1.5 or 1.6 mm would be better than 1.3mm.
3) More Screen Options -
1080p matte with in cell touch
QHD Glass touch screen
4K touch
4) i agree with easier to open
5) more USB ports 3 usb A ports and 2 USB C ports to get more space we replace the charging port with a USB C with quick charging .
left side USB C charging port, USB 3.0 A, HDMI, USB C with thunder bolt, headphone jack
Right Side USB 3.0 A, USB 3.0 A, SD card reader ** relocate battery metter**
6) usual CPU and GPU upgrades.Last edited: Jul 25, 2016Joe Random and ghegde like this. -
Specs for the mobile 1060 indicate a 10W TDP increase over the 970m. Guess we'll be seeing the 970m in thin notebooks (unless they do a 1050) for a while

How about making a 17 inch 1080p (QHD 4k) verison. Be nice if Dell would surprise with that especially since Kaby Lake processors have now been shipped to manuafactures.

Wishlist:
- Optional materials like magnesium in grey and black (i don't realy like the carbon look...)
- The bottom should be more flat and cleaner (no exhaust because that would be better when you put the laptop on your lap)
- Thinner and lighter (it's already thin and light but it could be thinner and lighter)
- 32 GB RAM option with matte FHD display
- Fingerprint Scanner for Windows Hello
- Better Webcam with Windows Hello compatibility
- A laptop lid that's easier to open
- Optional full keyboard with a dedicated keypad
- Force Touch trackpad like MacBook's
- And of course: all the hardware updates (Kaby Lake CPU, GPU, faster Samsung SSD, USB-C,...)
@Skareem2: Sorry but i disagree with you. I like the short key travel... for me it could be like the new butterfly keyboard in the macbook...

Given that Kaby Lake samples are already shipping to its OEM partners, when can expect to see the new XPS line? Does anyone know if Dell will be showing at IFA this year?

I may be in the minority here but I would really like Dell to bring back the XPS 17. The L702x was going to be my last laptop but they pulled the B+RG screen option shortly beforehand. I settled on the L502x with the screen instead.
Miss my big high quality screen so I do..!Joe Random likes this. -
Perhaps with a not yet anounced gtx 1050?
That would be nice.Arondel and Joe Random like this. -
Has anyone seen movement from Dell about an XPS refresh? They have one laptop that combines InfinityEdge with a good keyboard, but it's an outdated 13" Latitude. Hopefully this will change.
The laptop could be made lighter by moving more peripherals to a power brick (or so-called "dock") that connects via ThunderBolt. Intel's Optane (which is a suite of technology to take advantage of 3dxmark) should also revolutionize the laptop field, so maybe Dell will be waiting to do their refresh when that comes out sometime in 2017. -
XPS 17 with quad core processor would be great, the Inspiron and the dual core U processors leaves a gaping hole in their range between that and the Alienware models IMO.
-
I agree. A 17.3" screen the size of a 15.4" with full keyboard (numerical pad for numerical data entry is god-sent) would be well received by many, I believe. Not to mention the XPS line has been one of the most attractive prospects for Apple switchers... and there's quite a number of them who miss the 17" MBP (which didn't include numerical pad, by the way).

Yes, I also agree 17 inch XPS that has (Skylake although it may be late for that so ( kabylake) i7.
And with some options below (not a full list) however main specs
SSD options 256 , 512 or higher? Not sure what is currently the largest size currently available now. Although I guess shouldn’t be too high the cost would be too much. Also nice to have option for dual drive 500 GB or 1 TB or if someone wants a 2 TB or 2TB HDD drive only nice to have that as an option.
Full HD 1080P or (4k) infinity Edge display 3200 x1800 (the Edge to Edge display like the XPS 13 and 15 has.
DDR4 Ram
1 USB 3.0 port 2 USB Type C / Thunderbolt 3 ports, HDMI 2.0 or/and Display Port, Bluetooth 4.1
Nividia Pascal
Personally I would not want a DVD drive or USB 2.0 port (s)
Make it as light in weight as possible
I realize some of the above specs stull would automatically come with it (DDR4 USB 3.0) and all the specs should be easy to include for 2016 or should I say almost 2017 notebook. (would be nice for CES 2017)
Fyi –Just want to add IMO there is an Extremely Slim to NO chance there will be another XPS 17 (sadly)Woodking likes this. -
The Dell Precision 17 inch looks quite good and a reasonable spec - the problem is it STARTS at £1847 before you even tweak anything!
Inspiron doesn't do it for me with just a dual core and the Alienware is more for the gaming market.
XPS FTW!
Are Dell likely to do a refresh or another model of the XPS 15 or 13 later this year?
