Yes you can but the hdmi 1.4 output only supports 4k@30hz (which is prob fine for movies). You'd have to use a usb-c to hdmi 2.0 converter to output 4k@60hz

I had the 4k; returned it for 1080p

    1) Better battery life
    2) The scaling on 4k was atrocious (not the laptop's fault, more a Windows issue)... made stuff crazy blurry.

Also, at least to me, the difference on a screen size of 15" just isnt that noticeable.

Hey guy's, I used these forums when shopping for my xps 15 and wanted to pay it back.
I got the 1080p screen with the smaller battery and 1TB HDD with 32GB SSD. First of all, I love this laptop so far. I am upgrading from the xps 13 2015 edition, and honestly I think I prefer this 1080p screen than the 3k one on my xps 13. Biggest thing I wanted to say is that the matte screen is not grainy at all (I have an older Matte display laptop for work and it is which made me afraid to order this). The screen is beautiful, you will be happy with the brightness / colors. Another thing that surprised me is that the 32gb ssd is an actual ssd and is not built into the 1tb drive. I have replaced this with a 500gb ssd and am seeing much better performance, I would definitely recommend swapping it out for a larger ssd when you have the chance but it's not necessary to start. The smaller battery was the largest concern I had but I deemed it not worth the extra $600 for the larger battery and 4k screen. So far I am not disappointed with the battery, I think I am getting something like 4 hours to a charge, but this included some playing of the Witness as well as running Unity IDE. For $1080 with a $108 gift card I am very happy with my purchase and am comfortable having this replace my xps 13.
Let me know if you have any questions about it, just wanted to provide some extra opinions on the cheaper model as I personally think it is the best value and a very capable machine and there isn't a lot of information out about it.

Also I got the premium M sleeve with the laptop, it's a nice sleeve and fits the laptop perfectly, personally I would feel better paying around $30 for it though - $50 is it a bit hard to swallow.

My understanding is the bigger battery comes if you only have one drive and has nothing to do with which screen you select. you can have a 1080 screen AND a bigger battery

and thank you for your feedback, very helpful and im swaying towards the 1080 screen now

Angrygiant I completely agree. I too got the i5/8gb/1080p/56whr/1tb+32gb version and paid just over a grand. No issues found and it works great. I quickly replaced the 32gb with a Samsung m.2 850 Evo which is good enough for most users and much cheaper than nvme. Did a clean install and it works good. I actually disabled the 1tb so that I get better battery life. Just got the dell $108 credit too which I'm hoping to put toward the 84whr battery if the ever sell it. I agree the 1080p looks fantastic and this is the best value.

You are correct, you can have both the bigger battery and the 1080p screen but the lowest configured model on dell's site that allows this is $1,779.99.
If I was going for the bigger batter I would have opted for this model from Microsoft store that has both 4k screen and big battery for $1,599.00:

Which is actually a great deal as well but for my purposes the 1080p screen is far more practical and I already had a 500gb ssd to throw in it.
