Well I noticed that I have a small knick in my screen. It's on the plastic. I first thought it was a dead pixel, but it's not. If I run my nail over it, you can feel it. Anyone else have an issue like this? I'm seriously thinking about calling Dell over this and demanding a new screen... Does this seem to be an issue to anyone else?

I see imprints of some keys (the general area of t, g, h) but I don't feel any physical damage on mine but if it's touching then there is a chance others will see a knick in the future.

It's a known issue. The way I get around it is with one of these.

    http://www.shaggymac.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=3&zenid=593c17185594cc4b202944f65764a8b4

It's a cloth that covers the entire keyboard. Made of super microfiber cloth, it pretty much doubles as a way to clean your screen and chassis. Not really that expensive, it's super soft too. You place it on the keys and close your lid, and because it's pretty thin, the hinge has no issues. Voila, no more scratches and no more grease/marks on your screen from the keys.

If you hunt around on here or on google, I think you can find either a 10% or 20% coupon code for them. Definitely worth it.

IT's a tiny mark.... It's normal wear get over it. Dell has no responsibility to replace cosmetic problems caused by consumers. It's like buying a new car and you accidently scratch it... You don't just demand a new one tw your fault, yor Problem.

Wait a second here....Who is to say it is his fault?

If this is a defect in the screen, then this is something that Dell should fix. Was there anywhere in his post that stated "that he caused this"?

And he's asking for help/suggestions from others on the forum, not negativity. :(

99% of the time, it is just dirt/oil off of the keyboard. Use a LCD friendly cleaner, or just water.

Yeah the screen isn't made well. They really blew it on the edge-to-edge screen. Instead of imitating Apple correctly, they did it cheaply. They used flexible plastic instead of glass. The screen isn't completely flat and touches the keyboard and palm rest when closed.
I got scratches on the screen of my first refurbished 1340 the first day and sent it back because of it. The second one got them within a week. I decided it wasn't worth sending back because it must be a design flaw and I got the laptop for cheap. They are also not visible when the screen is on.

Nice of you to be so snarky and completely misunderstand the initial question/problem. The screen isn't made quite correctly and TOUCHES the keyboard/palmrest when closed. Simple movement of the laptop when closed causes the keys to rub against the screen, which is not the fault of the user, but the absolutely shoddy design on Dell's part (to add to an ever growing list of idiotic things about this laptop).

I posted a link to an excellent solution to prevent the screen from scratching from the keyboard when closed, but that's just a solution to a problem that shouldn't have existed in the first place. This is Dell's fault, not the user's. The OP is completely within his right to request a replacement for this issue. Using your car paint example, it would be if the car paint dissolved away during some rainfall within 1 day of buying it; it would be upto the the car company to fix and replace it.

Which model did you ordered ?
I don't see any specificly designed for the XPS 1640.
Did you ordered one from custom design or the one from PC/16 inch ?

16" / 16.4" Widescreen ShaggyMac Keyboard Cover / Lcd Screen Protector
This one is designed for 16:10 aspect ratio, the XPS 1640 is 16:9

    Thanks !

I ended up buying the 16" once you mentioned. It fits the laptop with no problem. There's a tiny bit of the outer edge of the screen (bezel only) that doesn't get covered by the cloth, but it's very minor and honestly, those areas aren't really affected anyways.

    Honestly, I think you'll be fine. ;)

The keys and the touchpad should still be covered no problem with the one you linked and that's really the issue with the screen anyways. Long as the keys + touchpad are prevented from touching the screen, you're good to go!

I ordered the shaggymac when I got my laptop last fall.
    I got a custom size:
    1 x 17"-19" Custom Shop Laptop Screen Protector (SPCustom17) = $19.95
    Color Panther
    Width 15 in
    Depth 8 3/4 in

It fits perfectly edge-to-edge and does not stick out. I'll take a picture and post it here shortly.

Update: Here are some photos. Covers the entire keyboard + glossy area of laptop and overlaps just slightly into the aluminum border & matted black part. I was very surprised that they got my sizing so exact :)

Bizarre the one for 16' is 16:10 but the one for 15.6 is 16:9 aspect ratio. (in PC Laptop)

Wow, I might seriously buy myself one of those. When I first saw my friend's M15x (the first edge-to-edge I'd ever seen) I figured something like this would start happening... it's nice to know there's a semi-easy way to fix it.

I think the little rubber bumps on each side of the palm rest should be just a bit bigger (higher) so the lcd doesn't touch the keyboard.

I got something similar to the Shaggymac in October when I got my XPS 13. It is from radtech, and is probably the same as the shaggymac cloth. These clothes are really cool, and I got my friend one for her Bday when she mentioned how much she liked it.

I just got my 1645 (in closet until I can get it setup) and noticed a tiny slit in the screen as soon as I opened it for the first time.

Is there anybody that hasn't experienced this issue?

I'm really not looking forward to putting in a protector every time I close the notebook... Is the issue really that bad?

    Thanks!

i first had it happen maybe 8 years ago with one of my old Latitudes. Service guy that came to replace whatever was wrong with that one said to use a piece of styrofoam sheet to cushion the screen. when microfiber screen covers came out, i got one and yes, i use it every time i close the laptop and put it in my bag...

So if I buy this will I be safe in closing the lid? Ever since I received my Studio XPS 1647 I've been too paranoid to close it and so I've kept it open on my desk for the last few days. I can't stand scratches on such a nice screen so I'm really hoping the Shaggymac does what it advertises.

Yes, the ShaggyMac (or any other super thin microfiber cloth as large as this) really does the trick well. I have zero issues on my screen, no scratches of any kind, or marks from the keys. It also helps with dust a little.

I got mine! The 15.6" size does cover my 1640 sufficiently. But, I am going to order the 16" size..and use that one when my replacement 1640/or ..they are sending me, arrives. I will keep the 15.6" size as a nice microfiber cloth for cleaning the Lid, Screen & Keyboard. It's fantastic.

I ordered it in the grey color. Works great!

So, this is the item I have: http://www.topmic.com/141-0264.html. No idea on the vendor - didn't buy it from them....

It slips over the screen part that flips up - like a bag. Or a hat. Or a jimmie-hat...

It takes about 5 seconds to grab the corner, give it a shake to unfold it and slide it on. I did have to cut a couple holes for the screen latches to fit through. When I get to where I'm going, I open the screen, pull the cover off, give the screen a quick wipe down and fold it up and set it next to the laptop - that takes maybe 8 seconds...

Let me know if you want me to take a picture of how it goes... :p

Just a reminder to people, I had to order a custom size (Width 15" x Depth 8 3/4") to get it so exact because our laptops have a 16:9 screen whereas the pre-cut sizes from Shaggymac are for 16:10 screens.

What about using the sleeve that is coming with the laptop... should produce same result. You can put the screen in and then close it... The fiber looks soft.

ok would dell replace my m17x screen it has a scratch around where the track-pad is and some on the middle of the screen on the far right. I do not think this is my fault but then again it could be. i have an inspiron 2650 that i abused to the max. and it didn't scratch this quick. in fact it is in better shap as far as the screen.

Just to add some more data...the refurbished 1645 i received as a replacement had 2-3 rows of keyboard marks on the screen, especially on the right side, so yes the keys definitely rub the screen. Dell recommend i buy an lcd cleaner kit. Well after cleaning 4-5 times i have almost all the marks off...and by the sounds of this discussion i'll be picking up a shaggymat to prevent future wear :D

Attached are a couple of bad...inverted pictures of the screen before i started cleaning it up...in the 2nd one you can see the outlines of the keys
