Do you guys think Dell will upgrade the Studio XPS 1640 with a Ati Mobility 5650 once it gets released?

And do you think the 5650 will be much faster than the 4670?

    Cheers!

It's leaked, but nothing is anounced yet. Speculation says desktop versions might start appearing end of this year if not during the first part of next year. Laptop versions should follow maybe 1 or 2 quarters afterwards if we're lucky.

DX 11 ATi laptop parts aren't due until 2010 at the earliest.

Well either way, the 5650 will probably kick ! So I will be getting it once Dell releases a notebook that includes this Card!

Hopefully it will be close to as good as a Nvidia 260GTX :p

DX11 desktop cards supposedly coming out this month. 5770 next month. Mobility cards looks like they'll be released around Q1 2010.

Based on my experience so far, the gtx 260 is performing up to 2x or greater in some games vs my old sxps with 4670. For ex. in l4d, I can play it at 1080p with 16xaf and 8xaa and the fps rarely goes below 50. The 4670 struggled to get 40+ consistently at native resolution with no aa or af and shaders set to high instead if very high. So if 5650 matches the 260m in a smaller and cooler form factor I'll be impressed.

Well it will do fine for most games! As the 4670 already does.
As long as I can get a sweet Dell with a decent video card I will be happy :p

If you want gaming performance, get an Asus/AW/Clevo. If you want something in between then it's fine to settle for something like the SXPS. I'm just glad my legs don't burn now while I game w/the laptop on my lap :)

But the Asus is so hideous. I would feel embarresed showing it in public :p
I can play games at hight without 8AA, dont need that anyways..

Also, my notebooks CPU never passes 60C°

This is exactly a replay of when the Studio XPS was going not get the HD4670 lol... People are just never satisfied :p

By the time it gets the HD5650(assuming it does), you'll be talking about the HD6xxx series XD

You'd be surprised. I thought I wouldn't like it's look but in person it's quite a nice looking laptop. The only thing I dislike is the screen's thick upper bezel. Other than that, it's as every bit as nice as the SXPS I used to have. The keyboard is actually better than the Dell and functionally it's much better, especially with regards to palm and base heat. Buy whatever works for your needs, the SXPS is great but it couldn't do what I needed.

    You mean this notebook?

If so, never. Looks like a Toy, not like a serious notebook.
Also much too thick, I like the thin design from the Dell. Rather have a good looking/good brand notebook.
And have just 2AA instead of 8AA :p

Asus & Acer is the worse brands of (nearly) all brands in form of build quality. (been there, done that several years ago)

SXPS with 4670 works good enough for quite tuff games, hell, even 3670 handle FEAR in Native on a 1080p screen with good FPS.

Ati 4670 is already quite hot with SXPS 16, (hotter then 3670, confirmed that yesterday), so i dont think putting a even faster GPU will make it cooler :)

To each his own, some would compromise style for performance and vice versa. Anyhow, I agree that to pump a more powerful GPU in the Studio XPS 16, you'd need to make it thicker or increase the effiency of the current cooling system.

That's the BB version with a white lid and low res screen. The notebook is actually barely thicker than an sxps and it will not burn you when gaming. And let's not kid ourselves here, the sxps and Dell in general have high problem rates. I had to exchange 3 sxps systems just to get one that didn't have dust under the screen. If I ever need a "serious" laptop I'll get a lenovo. My purpose is a gaming and the asus excels. If I ever feel the need to be trendy I'll get a mac, not a Dell.

    Well still, an Asus?
Thats like getting a Ford instead of a VW.
Which might be faster but by no means better.

Also, Mac is fine. But I would rather get a stylish Dell or Sony. With full Windows Support and for half the price.

If you want serious gaming I would suggest you a Desktop. That notebook will be obsolete within 6 months from now.

Maybe you think that the asus is better. But that does not mean it is. Everyone got their own opinion, and that is a good thing or the world would be boring.

As I said before though, I would always sacrifie 16AA for a much better build notebook. The brand is also important for me. I want a BWM not a Ford.

But we are getting off topic now. Lets please go back to the topic :p !
Do you guys think dell will release the 5XXX series with their new line of notebooks?

I was looking at the Asus G51 (the one that was on newegg for $1300) but when I went to BB and compared it to the SXPS16 side by side I realized the SXPS16 was for me. The Asus was nice overall but had a flimsy feeling screen and the overall construction was not as solid as the Dell. The one on newegg also had a silly paint job which I did not like. But the worst part was the heat. My god does that thing spit fire (it was hotter than my PS3 which is like a hair dryer). It was not so much the computer but the air it was expelling (I know this is good but...). Something like that would not be very comfortable to take to class and would probably heat up my tiny dorm room pretty fast. The Dell was very well rounded. It played games at an acceptable level, was portable, nice looking, well priced and was not too hot. Not to mention its screen is amazing.

Its 1300? Wow!! That means it would be like 1400€ in Germany.

I got my Dell XPS for 899€, why would I pay 500€ more for something that might be a little faster in games but look overall like its much cheaper?

Also, the new Mobility 5XXX serious is supposed to be up to 30% faster, that would make them almost as quick as the 260MGTX.

@chrusti....you damn right, sacrifice 16XAA to 4XAA i do with a smile just to get:

better screen (Dells 16" RGB is best without doubts. far better then Vaios X-black)
    better build quality
better Support, (Asus support is horrible and DELL is best on earth)
more beautiful design, (Studio XPS is stunning. a splendid mix between MacBook & Xps)

Please, Dell is hardly the BMW of laptop manufacturers. If anything, it would be Ford in your flawed analogy. Mass produced and cheap parts = Dell. You aren't going to convince me SXPS is some special built laptop, I'm not some newbie that hasn't owned it. I know about that laptop inside out and while the display is a good redeeming factor, the implementation of it's design was rushed and horribly flawed--just like a Ford. Bad cooling design, lcd's that bleed, dust under the cover to cover panel, overheating base and palm rest, iffy QC (typical of Dell, refer to my 4670 thread for evidence) and support? Try telling the guy in the 4670 thread that has a defective power brick and no service tag (so dell refuses to provide him any support for his new laptop) how great Dell's customer service can be. The point of my posts wasn't to start a flame war, I'm still fond of the SXPS and think its an adequate laptop but it has some major design flaws and the end result will be early component failures. KSMB, most of the things you say are borderline retarded so I'll continue ignoring your posts.

    This is just your opinion.

In Germany Dell has very good reputation. No one knows Asus or Acer. Its no brand in Germany, seriously - people would laugh if they saw a funny looking notebook like that during class in my university.
Dell on the other hand is slick and very well known for their perfect service.

You are not going to convience me either, that notebook costs 500€ More than my Notebook, thats 70% the price I paid.
30-40% More Power (Only in Games) for 500 €? - No way.

    And it looks damn hideous.

    [IMG] - Seriously?

    End of story.

ps. My CPU idles at 39C°, the people you know off are maybe just 1% off all people who got a XPS. I got no heat issues at all.
No dust either. Just the speaker isnt that great - but then again, its probably much better than the Asus Speaker.

The sXPS will probably have a revision w/ Arrandale and 4 series still before the mobility 5 series is released (most likely will be like when sXPS 16 came out with HD 3670 and eventually was upgraded to HD 4670). I doubt the current sXPS models will get a 5 series in it.

I consider Dell being Volks Wagen. Its a decent brand, good quality.
    Sony is Mercedes or BMW.
    And Mac would be Porsche.

    :p

Asus and Acer are maybe some French or Korean brand.

It looks like this whole thread has gone beserk but having used 2 Asus notebooks previously and unfortunately a Dell in the meantime, I dont think Dell can ever reach the style and the build quality of Asus. Yes it might look good on big bang theory episodes but no thanks mate..Never again!

Darn, if they'd only show some GPU temps in the notebook with the 5650, then we'll see how it fares against the SXPS 16's 4670.

Oh well. Time will tell anyway.

I think they'll use the 5670 instead of the 5650, given the SXPS 16's history of using the higher clocked versions (3670, 4670). However, 5970 would be most welcome.

Perhaps there are chances for a 5750, which is said to be also made for 15,4". So Studio XPS 16 would reach around 8500 3d marks 06.

Let's see. ;) In DevilTech Fire DTX even the 5650 has a higher 3dmark06 score then the 4670 of studio XPS 16 (nearly 7900 3dmarks06).
    5750 would certainly be faster.

Yep, 5650 is now available on the XPS 16, for only AU$30 more than the 4670 :)
