I've researched this problem for weeks now. I have a XPS1530 t7700, 2gb ram, 160gb HD. Vista Premium 32bit.
It's the common studder, pop, skip, chop whatever you wanna call it when playing music or any audio while the internet connection is active. Using winamp, WMP, youtube, they all skip. Here is what i've come to discover, after trying eveyone's solutions, some working for others but all not working for me.
-Skippy audio happens ONLY when the internet connection is active (Intel Wireless 4965AGN), disable the connection and audio plays perfectly. Open a heavy bandwidth webpage or torrent program and the sound gets much worse. and Yes, drivers are fully updated 7/8/08
-Sigmatel HD audio codec is NOT the problem. I've completly uninstalled sigmatel and still have issues even with Microsofts generic HD sound drivers. currently using sigmatel driver R171789 for the Stereo Mix recording function. Sigmatel drivers fully updated as well.
-Disabling the wireless "A" band or both A and B bands doesnt do anything to fix the skipping.
-Installed the popular LG soundcard codec in place of sigmatel, and that did nothing.
-Called dell and they just think something is faulty and wanna start replacing parts. Thats doesnt work either, Ive read countless threads about dell replacing parts to fix this issue and it's just a waste of time.
Is there any hope of fixing this skippy audio??? mine skips soo bad where i cant even listen to music without wanting to smash my xps. HELP help HELP!
-
There is an article about enabling stereo mix. That actually fixes this problem although you lose the extra headphone jack and something else. It's pretty recent I know I saw it in the last 2 days.
-
Funny you mentioned that. I already installed sigmatel driver R171789 to get the stereo out capability. The driver took away the middle headphone jack (no biggie) and it lost the HDMI audio out, which i dont use anyways.
I was hoping this would have some effect on my audio problem but it didnt. Skipping still occurs no matter what driver i use. -
-
How common is this problem? I don't have the issue with my M1530 and both headphone jacks and HDMI Audio Out work fine.
-
What type of wireless adapter do you use?
-
I got the Intel Wireless N card in mine, it's strange some people would get the problem and others don't unless it's a hardware fault, doesn't seem to be a driver problem by the sounds of it.

i want to make it clear if i have a same problem. my sound crackles, stop etc. and computer lags a bit when using any network connection [doesnt matter wifi or normal cable]. BUT! not always, mostly after using computer for a while or after making it go to sleep and wake up/hybernation. I tried only disabling bands, but it didnt help. What are other possible solutions I can try? I have no more energy to search in this forum :// Can it be because of hdd or smth? its really strange. thanks in advance.

Alas, I too have the same (or similar) audio problems with my Dell D430. The popping sounds are subtle but regular and annoying. They occur anytime I listen to streaming audio of music, or CDs played on the external hard drive or music that I've downloaded. The pops persist if I then copy any music files to another device, like my Blackberry, through one of the USB ports. After reading this thread, it sounds as if this is another Dell problem that they won't own up to, and the solution is to just use the laptop for email, word processing, and Googling. I guess if the Almighty had intended for us to use laptops for entertainment rather than work, he/she would have put drawings of apples on their covers...

I have this problem and i am IN THE MIDDLE of trying to figure it out with dell
I had dell go onto my computer and try to replace some drivers and disable some things but NOTHING worked.
It happens when wifi is on OR off.
CLicks, pops, and occational skips....its rediculous
NO one has found a fix yet???? -
I'm assuming most of you that have sound problems are using dedicated cards? If you look at one of my topics I made, you can read up about my findings on the issue. I'm willing to bet that Powermizer on the Nvidia cards is causing you problems.
Edit: Thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=252235 -
Wow, you're absolutely right, changes in the clock speed of the Nvidia card gives me pops and stutters too. It only happens when it downclocks itself, not when it upclocks.
This Nvidia powermizer is a real headache. Downclocking while playing games, and now its also the source of my audio stuttering?!?!
This better be fixed soon.
btw, this happens even when i'm using the X-fi expresscard.
and I was using GPU-Z to monitor clock speeds. -
Yep, i also hate powermizer, thats why i disable it
But i never got any of those slutters in the sound, seems my lappy came out allright. -
-
I am in line to talk to a 3rd tier support about this issue with dell.....any more suggestions?
-

UPDATE
I was told by a senior tech support guy that this is a known issue and most likely has to do with a wire that connects the LCD to the motherboard.
They are sending a tech to my house to replace this wire as well as my keyboard because my space bar squeeks like a friggen mouse!!
Anyways ill post if this fixes the problem ( im only on 1st week of owning this thing) -
yeah def let us know exactly what you're getting the guy to do and what the results are!

I had this regularly when browsing the internet. Songs would skip and pop approximately every 15-30 seconds, lasting for about 1/4 second each time. It was very annoying. But when I disabled the wireless internet card, (Function-F2) it would go away. It only seemed to happen when I was using wireless networking/internet.
I downloaded three things from the Dell website for my laptop:
1.) Downloaded the newest sound card drivers.
2.) Downloaded the newest BIOS update.
3.) Downloaded the newest wireless card drivers.
Now it only skips once every three or four minutes or so, and is much less audible when it happens. It's still not perfect, but it's acceptable. -
I'm having this problem as well. In my case the problem is probably caused by undervolting. Not a big deal with with movies and games, but gets pretty annoying when listening to music. Using ASIO4ALL instead of Primary Sound Driver as the output fixes the problem in foobar2000. I'd imagine it might help with other media players as well.
-
-
Nvidia doesn't offer the powermizer feature with my xps1530. dell takes care of that.I dont see how this problem is related to video when the popping stops as soon as i flip off the wireless switch. ASIO4All was also disappointing as it changed nothing.
-
I'm pretty sure Vista users cannot access Powermizer directly within Nvidia control panel, they have to use Rivatuner or do some registry hacking to play with Powermizer.
As for the wireless, I don't know how it can cause poppings either. But you may be on the right track. On my Sony SR, which has the Atheros 928x wireless, sound distorts every minute or so with my USB DAC. I have no idea what my wireless card is doing every minute, but if I used DPC latency checker, high latency around the 8000s correlates to my audio distortion. This disappears when I turn off wireless.
And I should have made this clear on my other topic, but ASIO may not work for certain internal sound cards. I have a USB DAC that takes advantage of its "latency compensation", which is why I did not get any pops at all.I attached a pic to compare with what you have. I'm pretty sure that there's a difference in settings when you use Sigmatel.
What's your wireless card, sickXPS, the 4965? Kind of odd that I never got any sound issues with mines with the two M1330s that I owned.Attached Files:

(last post of page 5).
However, your video card will run alot warmer.
To monitor GPU clock speeds, use GPU-z:
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/
and under the sensors tab, you can see when your clock changes. Do something video intensive, like playing a video, to make the clock change. Each time you hear a pop or stutter, see if the clock changes. -
Sorry just added to my sig. but yea i have Intel-4965AGN. disabling certain bands didn't help but seemed to work for many others. the perfect test is when winamp is playing and i press the IP Sniffer and the audio gets destroyed for about a second or two. skips everytime.
by the way nvidia just released (10/30/08) new drivers that fix the annoying sticky Digital Vibrance registry code. great job nvidia, bad job sigmatel. -
hi. i had the same issue when using winamp, however, i tested using Windows Media Player and now there are no skips whatsoever... strange isn't it??
give it a try, maybe it will save you -
Yeah this problem is hella annoying. I had my M1530 for about 6 months now and noticed the stutters, pops, etc. once in a while. It happens mostly when I am doing something GPU intensive, like scrolling through a page or highlighting something.
I had the Vista classic theme for a while now and noticed the stuttering happened less frequently. Now I decided to go with the Vista Aero theme and it stutters alot more. In addition, I just upgraded to A11 bios this week (will be reverting back to A09 soon to do some testing).
Here is my log from GPU-Z:
