    Hi guys -

I am in a bt of quandry, my Dell XPS 1710 switches itself off after 5 min automatically; I know its not the dust cause I have just opened and cleaned the heatsinks yesterday; the only other thing I can think of is the thermal compund on the cpu might have dried!

A bit on the problem then for your suggestions; after about 5 min - max my laptop switches off automatically! sometimes the system leds stay on while the monitor goes lank and systems looks like it has powered off; while at other times even the system leds and the toucpad leds goes off along with the system!

Suggestions and ideas would be appreciatd!

    Regards,

    Apro.

Try pulling the battery out and run it on AC only. After that, do the opposite (battery, no AC).

Just want to see if there is a power problem, but it sounds like a mobo issue to me.

Have done both and yet same result!

Could the thermal paste be a reason; or is it the motherboard?

Moreover when the computer powers off there is a low distorted noise that comes out of my speakers for a sec!

A tricky one, it could be as you suggested the CPU overheating. Is it possible to reseat the heatsink on this mode?

What happens if you go into the bios and stay in there, does it shutdown after 5mins then?

Or as Sleey0 suggested a faulty motherboard. I would try and reseat the CPU and heatsink if you think you can do it.

Yeah it happens within the BIOS as well!

If you are still in warranty - call Dell.

If not, go to Dell's webiste and extend your warranty, then call Dell :) (overall, it would be cheaper to do that than to buy a mobo)

Stupid question, but are you sure the fans are all plugged into the mobo? It is very easy to get one of those connectors loose....
