Since I installed the A06 BIOS (dated 020210) the fan seems to be spinning 85% of the time now. With the previous BIOS (A03) it only spun every now and then. Is anyone else experiencing this? I wouldn't mind if the fan was silent but it's not and after a while it becomes annoying. The notebook is now louder than my desktop.

Will the A07 BIOS address this as well? I certainly do not want the fan spinning all the time other than when it's absolutely needed (heavy loads etc). Any other way to control this behaviour without risking damaging the notebook due to heat?

It's because of the faulty nvidia GPU core, they want to keep it cool so that it wont fail within the warranty timeframe.

I would be very surprised if the cause were the nVidia GPU - mine has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 card as does every 1645 as far as I know......

Are we talking about the same system? the A06 dated 2/2/10 is for the 1645, right? That baby doesn't have an nVidia GPU.

I'm also running A06, and there is a definate change in the fan behaviour. It doesn't seem to be on 85% of the time, but still very often. And it is indeed noisy.

I haven't done any testing, but you could try mapping CPU & GPU temps to the fan behavious to see when it starts / stops...

I'm personally not gonna complain, in my opinion the fans weren't running enough before, now it stays nice and cool which is nice for a change. In my experience dell laptops are notorious for getting rather toasty.
