My XPS M1710 is running XP and is displaying this message when trying to boot up:

WARNING: The battery attached can not power the system. The system will not boot with this battery plugged in. Press F1 to shutdown the system.

The message still appears even if I plug in the charger, after a new replacment battery , and flashed the BIOS to the lastest version. The laptop will only boot up if I remove the battery.

If I insert the battery after the boot up and unplug the charger the laptop will function normally for over 2 hours till the battery goes down.

Is there a setting or hack to disable the battery check? Or anyother advice?

I have never seen this message before... Have you checked if problem might be the CMOS battery? Since you said your laptop's primary battery pack gives you 2 hours before it's drained, it makes me think that your battery is fine.

Also, have you tried cleaning the battery's contacts? Clean Your Laptop Battery Regularly for Better Battery Life and Efficiency (I don't believe regular cleaning will extend battery life and all that, but it's a good idea to do it anyways)

A dead CMOS battery wouldn't normally cause the system to not boot like this (though your system clock would reset, some settings may not stick, etc.), but it's worth a shot I think.

Did you just replace the battery?

I believe you've got the lower-capacity battery that only works in the E1705/9400 instead of the higher-capacity battery that works in all the units with this (M1710/M90) chassis.

Possibly, got the battery from laptop battery one, only difference from original is it is 4400mAh/49Wh and the original only shows 80WH, could that be the issue? Web site showed it as the replacment for the M1710 and even for the battery type U4873.
