Hey seeker, im currently trying to find the right OC for my 4670 with the program you recommended (OCCT).
Would you say its only stable when OCCT says 0 errors? Or isn't it that accurate?
    Thanks

The stock clock/volt combos in your vBIOS are:

    157 / 200 / 0.90v
    300 / 300 / 0.90v
    400 / 500 / 0.90v
    450 / 500 / 0.90v
    405 / 800 / 0.90v
    500 / 800 / 0.95v
    750 / 800 / 1.12v

The majority of the time it is already running at 0.90v, it only goes up to 1.12v when under a heavy graphics load. Do you want me to drop the voltage for the 750/800 clocks down to 0.90v? I could, but I can't promise it will be stable with clocks that high. Alternatively, I could drop 500/800 to 0.90v (more likely to be stable at that voltage), and just remove the 750/800 clocks altogether. Your card would be slower, but use less power.

Edit: I'm going to be traveling for the next few days, so I might not get to your response until Wednesday or so.

Hi Seeker, is there an A13.5W bios with stock GPU clocks? This seems to be different from the bioses linked in the original post, if not, just let me know and I'll use that one.

    Hi everyone!

Has anyone already tried to modify the A15 SXPS1640 BIOS released 13/04/2011?

    According to this thread:
    ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5470 Overclocking - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

Someone is able to overclock it even with voltages at 0.90v. But he crashed at 850/1050/0.90v but he ran stable till 850/1025/0.90v according to the post. So assuming I would like to give my card a little headroom I at least hope to get 0.95v.

Try making 4 versions of this bios if you can with these moddifications:

    500 / 800 / 0.90v | 750 / 800 / 0.90v
    500 / 800 / 0.90v | 750 / 800 / 0.95v
    500 / 800 / 0.90v | 750 / 800 / 1.06v
    500 / 800 / 0.90v | 750 / 800 / 1.09v

1.06v and 1.09v are sane values to try. So if you think it's too much to make all 4 off them at least make the to last ones please.
I will try testing each of them and see what comes out best for me.

    Thanks! And happy travelling!

This is a bit off the current topic, but i was wondering...what kind of battery life improvements do people see with the slower (lower voltage/low clocks) vbios settings?
Currently mine gives me almost 2:45 hrs..I was wondering what kind of improvements i'd have if i had the slower clocks..

Much heat can decrease maximum battery capacity permanently.

How much less power you use depends on many factors. Like how many components you have in your notebook. How many power they use.

It also depends on screen brightness :)

I figured my notebook draws max 45W from the wall, but uses 30W when going extreme power saving. (When using Windows Power Management)

I did this one at 0.95. After flashing it, try running OCCT w/error check for 15min, FurMark for 15min, and one of the 3DMark benchmarks. If it doesn't crash or give you errors then you should be good. Use GPU-Z to verify that the voltages and clocks are modified as they should be.

If it crashes, we'll try 1.00, if not, you I could make you a 0.90 if you're willing to try.

No donations necessary, I can mod BIOSes like this thanks to the works of many others on this forum who didn't charge me anything for their help.

Tried OCCT. I had artifacts all over the place. I think we should try 1.06v.

I don't think we have much headroom after all. I think 1.06 is our best bet.

Thanks for helping the community. I wish I had the knowledge to do it. I know about hex editing how things work but I never hex edited a BIOS or program.

I followed the link on the first page ("Tool to Insert/Replace SLIC in Phoenix / Insyde / De1l / EFI BIOSes"), and it mentions that it is best to flash from DOS. Is that also the case here, or is the WinPhlash 64-bit safe to use? I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be linked in the original post if it was likely to cause problems, but I'd rather be safe than sorry when it comes to bios flashing :D

Flashing from DOS is always safer from the standpoint that less external things can go wrong, such as the OS blue-screening half-way through a flash and bricking your motherboard. That said, I've flashed my BIOS hundreds of times using WinPhlash 64, and have never had a problem with it.

This one is working. I ran OCCT even a second time overclocked on 850/1025. I even reached 918/1025 which seems to be the hard limit of the card.

Make your suggestion. If you still want to help me finding my optimal setting. I would like to try 1.00 and 1.03 if you are still up to it :) But specially 1.03. I think 1.03 would be the ideal balance.

And if you are then still willing to do it we can try lowering the 0.95 voltages as well.

It's up to you. I am so glad you helped me!

it wasnt stable at 918/1025. So i put it on stock clocks with 1.06v again

Can you give me a download link to the tools I need to do this?

I have a tutorial made by Kizwan.
    Phoenix BIOS Edior Pro...

But it seems that I can't rebuild my edited BIOS. All options are grayed out. I get a error of ROMEXEC

I did change the 0.95v to 0.90v on that BIOS already.

What exactly do you mean? If you want to try modding it yourself, you need 2 tools. The first is the Phoenix Tool linked to in the first post of this thread. The second is the Radeon BIOS Editor (google RBE). Download the phoenix tool, unzip, and run it. Select the BIOS you want to modify. After it works for a minute, a popup will appear, hit ok. Select Dell from the pull down menu. Leave the other stuff blank. Hit the 'advanced' button. Click yes at the warning. Select the boxes for 'No SLIC' and 'allow user to modify other modules'. Leave everything else the same. Hit 'Done'. Back on the main screen, press go. It will work for a minute, then a popup will appear saying 'You may now make manual alterations to any module in the DUMP directory'. Do not press the OK button. Open up RBE. Navigate to the location of the original BIOS. There will now be a new directory called DUMP. Go in there, and use RBE to open the file OPROM02.ROM (the vBIOS for your particular card in that particular BIOS). Edit it however you want. Save the modified vBIOS to the same name it was before. Now go back and hit the OK button on the Phoenix Tool popup. It will work for a minute, and spit out the modified BIOS. Flash it. Done.

The process is the same for 1645/47, except the vBIOS file is OPROM00.ROM (4670) or OPROM01.ROM (5730). However, this is only for the GPU OC. All the other changes I made to the 1645 A13.5 require more complicated module modifying.

Seeker_Moc how do I test the custom 0.90v voltages you applied? Is there a way? I was hoping I could try making all voltages as low as possible. But I would need to test it.

All Voltages are at 0.90v except the 750/800 clocks

I set the 750/800 to 0.96v which is stable

Unplug the power cord. The 500/800 clocks should be your max battery power clocks (I think).

This is kindof a shot into the dark, but is it possible to flash the video bios of the XPS 15 (L501x) from a 420m/435m to a 540m? They all use the same core GF108 and are essentially identical.

seeker, I'm running your 1647_813_1067 OC and when I unplug the power cord, my max clocks are 300. Why is that? Tried it on "high performance" and "balanced"... same result.

Edit: Nevermind.. it was my PowerPlay settings.

As long as the vBIOS size is the same, it should work, unless there's some new feature present in the 5xx series that's not in the 4xx even though it's the same core. Alternatively, it would probably be safer to just mod your current vBIOS to match 540m clocks. NiBiTor should have been updated by now to the point that it will mod the 4xxm vBIOSes. I'll download it and take a look.

    Hy Guys!
first time excuse me for my bud english!

in second time I ask You if the latest modded bios is able to control the fan.....
my fan is every time on... I changed the thermal compound with AS5 and I have removed de dust filter....with no luck!

I'm not interested for overclock, but only for fan control....if anyone know another way to control it is wellcome!

    I tried ik9fangui, Speedfan....but booth aren't working.....

    tnx!

We haven't managed to be able to change the fan settings. Even with the fan trip points unlocked in the BIOS, the fan seems to be hard wired to kick on at 55C, and nothing will change it.

The FAN wasn't controlled using standard ACPI specification. Most of notebooks, if not all, are in the same situation. The FAN doesn't read the ACPI's Thermal Objects especially (at least) the _AC0 and _AC1 (high fan speed and a low fan speed respectively). On notebooks, there should be several _ACx objects because it not just two speeds. You can check the _ACx objects using AIDA64. The value is in tenths of degrees Kelvin. For example if the value is 3000 (in decimal), the value is 300.0 Kelvin. The alternative solution is by hacking the Embedded Controller (EC).

Just looked at this and on this system; the values on 0x63, 0x64 and 0x65 change with the fan (they are 00 when it's off).

    - 1st fan level changed 0x63 from 00 to 01 and second fan to 02 value...etc.
    - When the fan starts, 0x64 goes to 02 (from 00) but any changes to it, it moves right back automatically.
    - When the fan starts, 0x65 keeps changing all the time (like a clock/timer?).

    add:
    - 0x41 changes from 03 (when the fan is off) to 07 when it starts/runs. Changing this to 00 turns the computer off immediately and changing it to FF, it goes to EF automatically (fan behaves normally).

    add2:
    - 0x56 shows the TZ01. When it reaches the value of 2F (47 degrees), the fan turns off. When it reaches the value of 37 (55 degrees), it starts. I can change this value to stop the fan but it will start again as soon as it hits 37.

    add3:
    - DSDT output is pretty spare, but fan is listed under both 0x3C and 0x5E offsets..

Haven't found a way to do anything manually yet as it changes the values back automatically/immediately.

What is the value at offset 0x62? I'm just guessing, probably need to change the value at offset 0x62 to enable FAN manual control.

This is taken from 1645's DSDT. Probably it can help you in finding the automatic/manual FAN control bit. I found 3 FAN related objects in it.
    Code:
                    Device (EC0)
                    {
                        Name (_HID, EisaId ("PNP0C09"))
                        /* more codes. skipped. */
                        Name (_GPE, 0x16)
                        OperationRegion (ECRM, EmbeddedControl, Zero, 0x0100)
                        Field (ECRM, ByteAcc, Lock, Preserve)
                        {
                            WKEV, 8,

I thought about that too from looking at the other thread but 0x62 is empty (00) and does not change at any time.

The DSDT output does have fan mentioned under 2 offsets, both of which have values that do not change. But then in the DSDT output they also have a value after them and I don't know what that exactly means?

add: does linux/ubuntu give us more to visibility to ACPI etc? I changed the fan values in BIOS and then compared the RWeverything, it was exactly the same.

Just a bump on the DSDT / fan stuff, anyone have ideas? I've tried going through the DSDT file looking for anything that might imply fan setting but cannot find anything (zero + 4 settings last being 100%).

I haven't had much of a chance to take a look at it yet, I've been working long hours this week. I'll take a look this weekend and see if there's anything I might do.

Made some progress now actually. I can either leave the fan on permanently or off permanently.

If I change 0x60 from 40 to 00, it changes the fan state (0x63) to FF and the fan either never stops or never starts (depending on if it's on when I do it). I've let it sit here for about 10mins and TZ01 is at 67 degree, GPU at 75 degrees and cores between 67-70.

I just re-enabled it (back to 40) and the fan went to level 3 and then back to level 2 and 1, so it's working normally.

You can check it using AIDA64. Thermal objects you might want to check are (for more information, please read ACPI specification doc):-
    • _AC0 - high fan trip point
    • _AC1 - low fan trip point
    • _PSV - passive cooling trip point
    [IMG]
You can try lower the passive cooling trip point to test it. You'll noticed the processor throttling when temperature reached the trip point you set. It's the only setting that has an effect on my Dell. When you change the low & high fan trip point in BIOS, the _AC1 & _AC0 values will change too.
Sorry, I have no idea to help you. There are too many permutations for trial & error. ;)

It's a bit of a PITA, I haven't played around since this post.

The instructions for this are somewhere here but basically

    - download RW-Everything
    - start it and go to the EC (Embedded Controller) tab
    - if you change the values mentioned above, you should see the same thing happen.. but if you find something else, let us know. I'd recommend taking a screenshot and saving it to make sure you remember what values you had before (some change all the time, so those won't matter but others are static or 00).
