Just found a new BIOS update for XPS 1530M, is a recommended download dated 7/25/2008. One of the fixes was, added enhancement for thermal control. Not sure this has anything to do with the nvida problem or not. Just a quick heads up for those of you that are interested. Is A09 BIOS.

Been checking my GPU temps and this revisions seems to help. Fan comes on a little bit earlier and takes the temps down a few degrees more.
-
-
Quick notice. I am updating it right now.
-
Hello, I currectly have bios version A07, if i update to A09 does it includ the A08 version aswell? or i need first to update to A08, couldnt find any explantion about it in Dell
-
-
No need to go through A08, just download the A09 version.
-
btw, I got A08 and the touchpad issue was still there, anyone else noticed this?
EDIT:
A09 hasn't fixed this either.... -
Updated, temps decreased slightly also boot time seems to of shaved off at least 2 seconds
-
Yeap, I updated too.
It's more quiet now and temps have indeed decreased a little. Good one. -
Has anyone ever tried reinstalling an older BIOS? If I don't like A09, I'd like to revert to A08.
-
But yeah, A09 looks good.. Temp' decreased and as 'artful' said, my boot time appears to be shaved off a couple of seconds as well... Nice!! -
This is just going to prolong the video card slightly, until it is possibly out of warranty and ultimately fails; as well as cause strain on the fan reducing battery life and fanlife....

How do I check my BIOS revision?
-
You can find everything about your system here. Hope this helps. Cheers.
Anyways, I would guess you are with A08 (Have you got your system yet? Your ESD says 25/7) If not check with the vendor / dell and request them for the version details. If you haven't got it yet, probably you might get yours with A09!!! -

Sorry for my previous post which I edit'd out here... no need to reboot. Here goes...
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information and on the right panel, you can see the BIOS version

I did the update, but it took like 5 minutes to reboot??? I was stuck at the dell boot page for like 3... Normal? -
Yep, the first time (when you are updating or flashing the BIOS) its normal. Took kinda the same for me.. It doesn't get 'stuck' because if you look at the progress bar carefully it keeps moving in small bits and slowly... but then its all back to normal life. Cheers. -

..) Anyways, now I wouldn't worry much. This is a nice machine and just keep updating stuff with the latest from Dell or manufacturers. Your baby should be well-behaved and most loved

Those with the new bios - does it run the fan more than before? And how has it effected battery life.
Thanks -

Run the fan. -
It runs the fan less tha before and notebook is much more quieter. Battery life .. uh, no idea yet. : D

Finally, a Bios update for my computer!
-
updated.
testing: 5 degree off while gaming Devil May Cry 4.
how many degree are you off guys? -
-
Updated the bios now. My fan was previously off most of the time (I use my XPS largely for office work - no great demands on the GPU...I might have just had integrated graphics if it hadn't been cheaper to get the 'better' GPU as part of one of Dell's details).
The fan's now on more often - about half the time maybe - though seems to be slower/quieter. Annoying, though -
Ya i think im noticing increased fan usage as well.
Just for the record - can you flash back to A08? -
oddly, in a very unscientific test, battery life seems to be slightly improved in the new version if anything.
On high performance setting, with battery 100% charged to start and me doing standard office-type stuff, I worked on battery for 25mins. pre-update, this took me down to 74% charged, afterwards, I had 77% charge after 25mins... Unscientific, I know - and I'm sure someone more skilled will do a better test in time. -
Can anyone with A08 BIOS or prior post what Nividia Video BIOS version in System Information under the Nivida Control Panel is. I am using Dell BIOS A09 and Nividia Video listed as 60.84.5e.00.08. The fan increases speed at 64 degrees C and is back to idle speed at 52 degrees C.

Did anyones biometric fingerprint scanner stop working or doesn't work properly since updating the bios?
-
just checked - mine's still working.
-
what exactly is the touchpad issue? can you describe it for me so i know if i have it or not ?
also, somewhere i heard a rumor that performance is also decreased when updating to the new bios because it "throttles down" or underclocks the gpu speed to keep the temp low... is there any kind of truth to this rumor at all? -
Its where if you put the lid down, and then open it up, the pad is erratic and not responsive for about 30 seconds or so
-
Ok its working again now. But before nothing would register or it would always say too short.
