I have a problem that I can't really seem to wrap my head around.
I just did a harddrive swipe after having some problems with my vista install, so I thought that I would do a clean install. In that process I accidentally wiped all partitions so I don't have mediadirect or the recovery partition. I can live without mediadirect, so I just installed vista from the dell supplied cd, and everything seems to work fine, until I do the first windows updates. After they have installed the system needs to restart, and on the restarts i get a BSOD. I can't boot in safe mode or nothing.

I figured this had something to do with the drivers. I had done the system updates before I installed all the drivers from the Dell driver cd, so I thought maybe I should install the drivers first then. So I do a recovery off the vista cd, boot up fine and start installing drivers. After installing the drivers and getting them up to date. I then do the windows updates again and restart. Same problem. Restart BSOD. It's getting late and I'm really frustrated, so I decide to sleep on it. So I turn off the computer and go to sleep.

Today when I turned it on it booted without any problems. And in vista everything seems to be working fine. But whenever I do a reboot I get the BSOD problem again, and have to turn off the computer completely before I can boot again.
Its quite annoying, and I frankly have no idea what could cause this. Any ideas appreciated :)

Did you load the intel matrix storage driver during your installation? Is your laptop in ATA /AHCI mode? Check the bios to see this.

What problems did you have with your Vista install exactly?

The problem I had was that I had ****ed up some codecs.. installed too many different ones that were conflicting. And usually on my desktop (running XP) I just reinstall the OS if it seems easier than to sort out the problem. So i opted for the reinstall on my laptop as well.

My harddrive is running in AHCI mode. Not sure if I installed intel matix stroage driver, but I don't think so.
