My xps 15z is showing a shadow like darkness towards the bottom right corner of the lcd. The clock and date of the taskbar are visible, but is very much darkened. I used the laptop yesterday night too and shut it down, from today morning the screen is like this. The darkness is covering a couple of square inches. Any idea what this is?? I'm out of warranty, and I dont want to purchase a whole new display :(

Sounds to me like a defective backlight. You could try opening up the machine and running the LCD without a bezel or trying to run it on a different machine.

Do you have a pic you can take of the desktop to show how it looks like? But ask another poster stated it sounds like the backlight or parts of it is going bad and if that is the case you will have to buy a new lcd and replace that defective unit unless it is still under warranty still? So before taking it apart make sure it isn't still under warranty if not then you might have to invest in a new LCD but that will depend alot on how much that will cost you to do DIY or have some do the repair for you. A another good test is to see if the output to the ext video vga or hdmi diplays if that work and the LCD still goes dark or become not visible but the desktop or icons are still visible but barely then your LCD backlight needs replacing. So there are a few tests you need to do to confirm what the problem is and where it is located at.

If the problem is that of the backlight what are the further steps to repair it?? I'm sure its out of warranty, so I think I should handle it myself. Do anyone have any idea about the price of a replacement lcd, if the lcd is broken??

You have do a search online to find if some has take apart the LCD bezel if they left instructions on how to do it and then once you have it out look at the backside and there should be on there something saying it Part Number and then you use that and go do something like eBay and search that part number and see if someone has a New LCD for sale that you can purchase to replace your current one. Fixing the back-light involves taking apart the LCD assuming you don't break it or the back-light in the process of taking it apart. Something not advised unless you have the proper lab table to work on and only if you experienced enough to do the fix. But a LCD replacement is by far the less costly option and labor to fix. Other wise use your dell Service Tag number and look it up on the dell site and they might give you the part number listing for it and you can cross that with eBay and see if you come up with a matching LCD replacement.
