I am planning to purchase the 9650 once it comes out, but I am a slightly undecided when it comes to which screen to choose. I like the long battery life that FHD provide, but I also like the color accuracy that the UHD gets you, plus 4k is more of a future proof resolution that could potential be nice to have once software and apps catches up with it later on.
From what I can understand the FHD with the biggest laptop battery will last you around 9 hours. And same laptop but with the UHD screen at 4k resolution will last around 4-5 hours, which makes sense since the GPU has to render 4 times the resolution.
However no one seem to tell how long the laptop will last with the UHD panel set to 1080p resolution.
4-5 hours battery life is not very long compared to the 9 hours, so if the UHD at 1080p perhaps would give you 7 hours battery life, then I would actually consider choosing the UHD panel.

Are there any xps 9550 owners with the UHD screen, who would know what the battery life is like when the resolution is set to 1080p, compared to the FHD panel laptop?

    Cheers

It won't make a noticeable difference to get the UHD screen and set desktop resolution to 1080p.

What you are suggesting only reduces the amount of work that the GPU needs to do. And GPU workload is minimal when compared to LCD power draw; especially on 2D desktop use. You are still outputting to the same screen, and lighting up the same number of pixels.

Alright, I guess that answers my question then, thank you for that kent1146 and pressing.

Now it seems the UHD screen for the 9650 looks to have different specs compared to the UHD panel in the 9550 model, I hope they have managed alter the UHD panel so that it draws less power.

I guess we will find out very soon!
