I'm looking to buy a xps 1330 with 2ghz C2D processor, 2gb ram, onboard graphics and WLED screen. What is the max battery life i can expect out of this? I'm kind of confused between this and the macbook (which gives around 4 hours for typical usage). Will this be able to give 3 and half hours on the 6 cell battery?

battery level is on of the things that makes me wonder the most on any laptop. there's just no accurate way of telling until you have one.

Well I have basically the same as you listed except I have the 8400m GS video card and get about 3.5 hours with the 6 cell. So I am assuming you would definitely get more with the onboard graphics. I get 3.5 hours with the screen brightness set to a very comfortable level of 5/7 and with Wifi on and Power Saver on in Vista. My replacement with a penryn processor is coming and hopefully that will give me more battery life and push me close to 4 hours. The damn A11 bios on my laptop keeps the fans running constantly which is bad for battery life.

I have one with a 1.8ghz C2D, Intel X3100 and CCFL screen and I get at least 3 hours 15 min if im not using any 3d app. 4-5 Hours if you're just on the internet/looking at pictures. Two to 2 1/2 hours if you're watching a SD video.

It depends what you are doing on the computer... If you are typing a Word document, or playing a game or doing graphic work or even tons of tabs/windows open... all of these things result in different battery life times. But on light usage (Web Browsing, Word, etc.) probably around 3- 3 1/2 hrs. Also screen brightness level matters. Under Heavy usage (Gaming, High Multitasking, Graphic Work, Photoshop, etc.) probly from 2-3 hours. But you cant be completely accurate, as the "time remaining" calculations Windows makes are rarely correct.

Well the power draw of my laptop during very light usage with what I said above was about 15W.

I get around 3:30 when using my lappy for normal browsing etc. My brightness is usually at either 4 or 5. RMclock shows the usage hovers around 14500~15500mw.
I have the LED screen and 8400
I have undervolted my notebook and usually it is running in SLFM (6x @ 0.9V )

Thanks guys :) well my usage will be wifi+some document+ music (through ear phones). I know the mac can manage about 4 hours with this usage. So with the WLED and onboard video, i think the dell should definitely put in around 3:45 hours of battery life.

My trip to the mac store is over. It looks good, but is a bit heavy for my liking. Should visit a dell retailer to get a glimpse at the 1330 and then decide :)

I personally dislike Apple myself but yeah you should definitely check them out first before making the purchase. The XPS is pretty light and looks really nice in my opinion.
