Hay guise.
CPU: i7 2630qm
GPU: GT555m (GF106 3GB)
I just ran CoreTemp while playing battefield 3 and saw that the processor speed was constantly at 2ghz. I then downloaded Throttlestop and unlocked everything and sat it to MAX. While playing afterwards i noticed a HUGE fps increase. I now could run ultra with 30-40 fps ! (Also max overclocked the GPU). After some moments the GPU was at 80C (!!) and the cpu was at 95C (!!) and the sensors TZ00 and TZ01 also reported 95C! T.J max for this cpu is 100C. How can i still manage to play at my computer while expericenzing these amazing frame rates? Have looked for cooler pads like CM SF-19 and CM U3, but not sure which one to buy.

After playing B3 for hours temperature reaches 75c for GPU (overclocked) and 85c for CPU, so your temps looks pretty high and I would say - risky!
When I bought my laptop first of all I made a repaste job. -
Seems scary. I'm not sure if I dare pulling my computer apart for a re-paste even though i have dissassembled many many machines successfully. It's such a nice laptop..

A cooling pad is a good idea but you can also try raising your laptop at the back so it has better airflow and also blow out the heatsink and fan with some compressed air.
If you decide to pull your laptop apart and redo the thermal paste then you might void your warranty. That's scary! -
Should i futher contact dell support? -
I would say make sure it stays under 95c to be safe. I think my l702x must of had a good paste as my cpu has never exceeded 88c and the gpu has never exceeded 77c (overclocked)
-
I had also overclocked my GPU to 770/1540 and mem: 1000
Running Throttlestop boosted CPU to 2,5ghz++ and gave a huge boost. Much bigger than gpu overclock imo -

this is intriguing... so the i7s throttle themselves dependant on power consumption or heat?
assuming throttlestop is an application that can stop this throttling on the l702x then? Would be interesting to see what sort of performance increase I could get -
It sounds like your CPU is throttling when loaded with BF3.
Anyway, it is pretty much impossible to cook an Intel CPU.
Regardless of how you have ThrottleStop set up, these CPUs will automatically throttle and slow down when they hit 100C. If that is not enough to cool them down, most laptop bios versions will do a thermal shutdown at 105C max. That is far below the 130C thermal shutdown temperature that Intel builds into their CPUs so no worries.
Do what you can so it runs cooler but if it is running fine there is no need to lose any sleep over what core temperature it is running at. Intel CPUs do a great job of looking after themselves. -
What about a GPU then?

Some good info for you.

Thanks for that info unclewebb so do you recommend throttlestop if the cpu is throttling? Surely it must be doing that for a reason.
That nbr cooling thread says the danger temp on a cpu is 75-85c well thats a load of bull! -
And yes, my GPU is overclocked exactly as yours.
-
Remember to put Battery Options in windows mobility centre or power settings to minimum CPU usage 100% and maximum usage 100%.. remember active cooling etc. etc. -

I have the U3 and I regret ever getting it. do you have a 9 cell? That would be the best way to cool your laptop because of the lift. The U3 does nothing in terms of cooling for me. I even set it up so it blows directly into the vent with and without the 9-cell. If you really want, you can have my U3, though haha. If you live around Philly. Not free, though, mind you.

I tried gta 4 monitoring the frequency and it went in turbo mode fine.

Use of ThrottleStop is at your own risk. -
Battlefield CPU throtteling and extreme temperatures!
