At first, I was not planning on taking my laptop anywhere (I know, then why didn't get a desktop?) I might want to move from room to room or sit outside.
Anyways, I recently took it with me to work to do some data entry and I bought a case for it, with shoulder strap.
It is meant for a 17" laptop, but with the XPS case they sent with the laptop, it fits pretty snug.
However, what is the best way to put it in the case? With the hinged part of the laptop down or vice versa? I have the 9 cell battery thing going so I have that extra part at the laptops hinge.
Here's a case similar to the one I have:

I always put mine in front-edge up because then I could just quickly grab it out of the case with one hand and it would be in the correct orientation. I figured that it would be easier on the lid latch too, in case you drop the case and it would hit the ground bottom down, where the sturdy hinges are. I also thought that it would be easier on the front edge paint if it didn't have to slide against the case wall every time you put it in or took it out. Just my 2 cents.

I can see the benefits for that.
However, with the 9 cell battery on the 1530 makes it easier to grab from there. I also feel that by grabbing it from the front edge, I always think I am squeezing it too hard to pull it out (hey, that phrase works on two different levels) and may do damage to it in the long run (yup, that one too works as well
)

never thought I'd see those phrases in the Dell forum!
I'd be careful grabbing it by the battery. I usually grab mine from the side, nothing really to be careful with that way. -
