What is the best XPS model to get in regards to reliable, little heat issues, fast enough for minor gaming (SC2) and long hours of use? Im thinking XPS 15 L502X?

I'm a little confused about the statement that suggests that "SC2 is minor gaming".. On a scale of 1 (solitaire) to 10 (hardcore), it's probably about a 9.

You need to be more specific on what kind of performance you're expecting- do you want to just run the game on the lowest settings, or the highest settings? It makes a big difference.

The L502x and the L702x both sound like they meet your criteria. My 15 hasn't had any overheating issues and I've played Crysis2 and Bioshock2 for hours at a time. The build quality seems good, but it's too soon to know about reliability. So far so good, though.

Yeah ok, thanks for the links to threads will almost no info and on outdated models...

I mean SC2 on low settings, meaning I dont need anything too fancy. I would just prefer a reliable laptop that can handle that game. Additionally, a laptop that one heatup uncomfortably after extended use.

Both GPU are sufficient for SC2 (525M, 540M, 555M) , the better thing to upgrade for SC2 is the processor, and specifically a quad core CPU. SC2 is one of those rare games that benefits more CPU cores than GPU (at a certain level). My i7 desktop went from a i7 940 quad core to a i7 970 six core processor, and now it can handle Extreme graphics @ 1080p, everything maxed out.

Actually those threads linked are on CURRENT models and have some good info. Don't get pissed at people that offer valid links just because you didn't read more than the first sentence.

And as said before, either the l502x (XPS 15) or the l702x (XPS 17) will do, I'd advise against the 3D option though, it has weaker gaming performance if you use the 3D feature, and it idles a lot warmer owing to no Optimus.

Really it boils down to what size you are comfortable with, the 15" or the 17". If you aren't going to carry it too much, grab the 17" it cools slightly better (not much note) and it has stronger graphics options. The 555m is a very strong card and can even overclock up to a GTX 460m level, which is a much more expensive card.

But the 15" is a good system too, it's totally up to you. Get the 1080p screen if you get the 15" though, it's basically mandatory. The 720p screen on the 15" is one of the worst quality 15" screens on the market. Even the Inspiron screen is better.

I would say get the XPS 15, the 17 was too bulky and big..if you want a desktop replacement then it would be the xps 17 but I rather buy a desktop with better specs than getting an xps 17 as its too large...

I got an xps 15 today and it is great.. EXCEPT they sent me one with deffective 1080p monitor so that made me mad lol but overall I like the xps 15...

STAY away from the xps 15z.. don't even get close.. lots of issues

Make sure you get the 1920x1080 display, especially in the XPS 15. There's an extreme difference in quality, and the higher resolution is much better for multitasking because you can fit more onscreen at once. 1366x768 is a mediocre resolution for a screen as large as 15.6"

There isn't one, XPS 15 R2 L502x is redundant. L502x already implies that it is the second revision(err, not really second "revision" as that would mean it's the third, but....you know what I mean lol) of the XPS 15.

I'll echo the points made by saying if your laptop will not be used on the move too much then get the 17 but if so then go for the 15. I wouldnt recommend the 15z as it has a weaker card and has a few issues. Although i like the slot loading disc drive. But to be honest you could probably install one into a 17 or 15 anyway if you wanted.

Does the L502X have much of a heat problem like the XPS Studio 1645?

I don't have any heat issues on my L502x, and my GPU is overclocked to 750/1500/1000

There have been some cases of overheating issues reported, but it's not the norm like with the SXPS 16's. These XPS 15's seem to have a well designed cooling system (barring any hardware faults) in my experience.
