I have the targus chill matt...and i like it alot...i cant give you comparisons between temps when its on or off but i can tell you that all my cores stay below 52 C when on it even at moderate usage.

Also the chill matt literally disappears under the laptop and in a weird way sticks to it...the other day i was underneath my desk fixing some wires and i accidentally knocking over the laptop..and the chill mat stayed attached to the laptop and broke the fall..so my 40$ has been well spent on that alone. Also thefans are SO quite i have to unplug it from my computer just to figure out whether not the thing is on..finally you can put this thing on your lap..on your bed or wherever and the laptop wont slidfe off and the bottom is comfortable and made for these types of things..

    overall highly recommend it.

A lot of people here will offer you realyl extreme cooler like the NC style that cost 80$ or so but honestly you're trying to keep your laptop cool..not trying to freeze it, plus with those expensive models its an external power supply which is a hassel trust me...

you should find some very usefull info in this guide here.

may i ask if this cooler for home use or is it often carried around with your notebook ? .
for mobility use, i personally would recommend the coolermaster notepal u2. which has 2x80mm removable fans, and can be used as protective cage when you turn it around and carry your notebook with it.

I can confidently recommend Logitech Notebook Cooling Pad (N100). I've used this ever since I bought it, and it's been very effective since a whole year ago. It is extremely silent, a pretty nice color, and very stable, light, and does its job in keeping my laptop cool. I'm not saying it'll make your laptop chilly, but I've definitely noticed a difference in the temperatures, both on program and by feeling the surface, when I use the pad or when I don't. It'll keep temps from rising, I guess is the point. It fits the XPS 16, and also elevates it, which is nice. Very good design. =)

I second this one. Dropped my max load temps by 4-5 C. My load average fell by 5-10C. Really quiet, uses USB not AC (while giving you another USB, so net loss of USB drives is 0), pretty light, and well built. The silver color is also a nicer color than the pictures make it out to be, and it goes with my black xps 1645 pretty well. I was at first looking at the Nzxt Cryo LX but that thing has been "out of stock" for too long  .
