To all those (like myself) that thought they were getting a good deal with Bing 20% off deal and purchased a Dell studio xps 1645 during thanksgiving/black friday deal, we got the old bait and switch pulled on us and it pisses the hell out of me.
Here is what I ordered on 28/11/09 for 2,994 + 179.64(tax) = $3,173.64
Dell Studio Xps 16 with mainly :
- Intel® Core™ i7-820QM
- Windows 7 Prof 64 bit
- 8GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz
- 128GB Solid State Drive
- Slot Load Blu-ray Disc (BD) Burner
- 2 Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty(Basic)
- Obsidian Black High Gloss Finish with Leather
- Full HD Widescreen 16.0 inch RGBLED LCD
And after the Bing 20% deal of 590.92 calculated from $2,954 subtracted from the total becomes
$3,173.64 - $590.92 = $2582.72 (is what i would have paid for this AFTER bing rebate)
Now, If you build the exact same configuration today on the dell website with Their Instant 20% off, it comes to a wooping $2,616.10 with tax and shipping.
Here is the 20% link from dell website for those who are curious (ends Dec 23) - http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/performance-deals/fs.aspx?refid=performance-deals&s=dhs&cs=19
A difference of 2582.72 - 2,616.10 = ($33.38)
I would take a 30$ loss for an instant rebate as opposed to waiting 90 days for it to come in the mail with a chance of a mess up from microsoft. My only issue is my laptop is already in the mail on its way to me, I wish I cancelled it before it shipped out, then I could of re-ordered it with the extra cash in my pocket sooner.
I'm not sure about all you other guys who ordered theirs with the bing deal, but I feel so cheated. So its true what people were saying, turns out not only does bing mark up the site you go to, it seems dell is also in cahoots with them. Damn it, considering all the throttling, bios, MB and AC adapter issues, I get even more frustrated at the situation.
Be back later, to rant more after I slit my wrists from all this stress.
-
You might have got screwed, but I got an amazing deal. Just to say, it's not universal. I started with a EPP discount, making my laptop go from around 2.6k (2.8k with tax) to 2.1k (2.3k with tax), then 20% cashback on the untaxed subtotal brought me down to 1.8k, to finish. I'm rather happy with the deal, especially since I plan on returning the operating system and a bunch of other assorted software and getting refunds for those, pushing my costs down even further.
-
Hope it works out for you, cause what I heard is that if Bing finds out about the epp discount or any other for that matter applied they might not honor their cashback deal.
Hopefully I heard wrong though. -
Uh... if you're happy with the price of the original deal and the conditions that come with it, then any future discounts from elsewhere isn't really relevant unless there's some misrepresentation somewhere?
-
jeffyen, The price after the discount can not be argued, its a good deal, its the 'conditions that came with it', Money($550) in the pocket today is far better than money in the mail sometime in the future (90 days minimum) with the potential of a screw up from microsofts end.
And the real grime of the issue is, roughly 2 weeks later the same "deal" but in a better form is there, so much for bing making us feel like we're getting a "Great" deal and enticing many including myself to a rushed purchase.(ofcourse no one stuck a gun to our heads and said "buy it now", but you get the point, atleast I hope you do).
No misrepresentation, but majority of people would have not minded waiting 2 weeks to have that money in hand instead of waiting for it, is my point. -
-
Nice, hats off to you then for pulling off that very nice discount.
-
That's such a moronic argument. How long does Dell have to wait before they can offer a better deal than the one they gave you? A week? A month? 42 days?
Hey, guess what buddy, the world doesn't revolve around you. Dell/Bing offered a price. You accepted, thinking - whether or not your were correct is irrelevant - that it was a good deal. END OF TRANSACTION. You are free then to do whatever you want with your laptop. Dell is allowed to do whatever they want with their pricing. They don't owe you anything. Go look up the definition of "bait and switch" before you start throwing accusations around. -
Also, you can cancel and reorder pretty much any time. Don't take no for an answer, you can just claim that you wanted to change some parts, and after you cancel you want to be transferred to sales so you can reorder. I canceled and reordered when my unit was in the BOXING stage. Don't feel you're trapped into anything.

I posted this before, i think it a rip too.
Is Bing Cashback Costing Users Money? Sometimes, Yes
Negative Cashback from Bing Cashback -
Wait....wait.......
Am I reading this wrong...
What other advertised Retail "Product" Did Both "Dell and Bing" "Bait and Switch" you to purchase that was advertised...and not available at the time of purchase??? I see that you ordered the product you wanted! They didn't bait and switch you to order something else..like say a Inspiron......
Your upset because you ordered a nice system thru Dell, used the Bing 20% Cashback Promo that was running over Thankgiving and are getting about $591 cashback in about 60 days to your Bing account??
But, now the fact that Dell is running the same system you ordered with a different pricing Promo...and it would have "netted you about $30 more into your Bing CB Account" ~ This is a "Bait and Switch" Scam?
I think not. Dell does this all this time. This is Business. They change their pricing nearly daily on their items. This current pricing has nothing to with Bing Cashback. Bing Cashback is currently at 5%.
You can try and e-mail your points presented here to Bing, and see what they say. But, I honestly don't think you will get very far. You have a choice of returning your system once received, and waiting to see if you can get another "better deal" over a $30 price differential.
And, the wait is not 90 days for Bing CB to show up in your account its about 60 days.
And, Bing is not crap. Bing has worked out very well for many peep's on this forum.

I don't see how you can say that Bing is crap because Dell lowered their price weeks later. It is the holiday season and of course they are going to have different sales at times to catch holiday buyers. I don't know how long you have followed notebook or even any tech prices, but this happens all the time. You should buy when you have the need and you are satisfied with the price. It seems like this was the case with you. You even got a better deal.
This is also not a bait and switch. -
What do you expect? 20% is 20%. So, yes the price for either Bing with 20% or Dell giving 20% off at checkout are going to be roughly the same, but maybe slightly different due to slight changes in component pricing.
Purchasing now though you can get the instant 20% from Dell, then an additional 5% using Bing and save another $100.
That's the problem with computers, as soon as you buy, the price for the same configuration goes down and will continue to go down. You buy when you feel you need to, otherwise keep waiting until you get a price you want to pay.
Once you commit to buy, don't even look at current pricing, because you will always be disappointed! -

Look at my sig rig. Now cry as I got mine for $1400

Point is: This is technology! The prices drop unpredictably! Its up to the company to decide how to get people's attention. And it worked they got your attention and you bought. I dont want to sound e relevant but as working and managing a retail store I have sold $1000 dollars worth of clothes to a single customer who never even intended on buying anything. Its called getting their attention and suckering them in, making them feel its the best deal of their lifetime.
Just to note something that everyone should know. Research this on the internet if you do not believe! Thanksgiving doesnt have the biggest sales!!! Its just hyped up so most of the nation goes and buys "products" on Thanksgiving, Black Friday.... But the biggest sales of the year are January-the end of February... Thats when all companies have the lowest number of sales, and they struggle to make any profit they can, weather its a big or small company!
I used to be a fool and stand the whole night out in front of Best Buy on black friday, sure I got a deal, but in a little mroe than a month the same item I payed lets say 100 bucks for, was 60. All business men know this! Thanksgiving and Black Friday sales are meant to get rid of the older crap.... January and February are just the thoughest economical months of the year, and any business owner will give you a ridiculous discount
To the poster of this thread. You should be happy you still saved 500 some dollars. But dont think if you see a great deal then tomorrow it cannot be cheaper. The deal could be twice as sweet the next day, but you never know unless you work for that company! -
I dont know what the big deal is anyways, you should think yourself lucky that the cashback thing is even there.
If you lived in any other country in the world, you'd have the same product, pay more for it (as much as double in some places), and have NO cashback whatsoever.
What is important here, is that at the time you bought, you were happy with the price, otherwise you wouldnt have bought at all now would you?! -
Looks like we have another contender for most retarded post of 2009 award!
Doing pretty well in the XPS forum -
And the winner issssssssssssssssssss?
Dell yet again... -
The house always wins! Stop trying to beat the house lol
-
Serously, you get 20% off and you're complaining? You give americans a bad name. -
I'm in the same boat as you with the bing 20% off. I don't feel cheated but I will try to call Dell so see if they will match their current price since i'm still in the return period. If they say no I wont be too upset and if they say yes and I lose the Bing discount that's fine too.
Bing 20% is Crap - Come and Take a Look how we got fooled.
