I just got the SXPS1640 and have been playing a game that is getting a bit warm after a few hours of play then the game started loading slower.

I was doing some reading and found that you can update the bios to A07? I found the download, but wanted to make sure that the computer doesn't already have this and how to install and it too.

Thanks for any help and comments!

emm just run the installer it checks ur bios revision and will not install it if u have the same or newer than installed on ur laptop than what is in the installer

dont quote me but im sure the page u downloaded the file from has fairly straightforward instructions

    hello chris.

this happened to my computer and others as well, even after the bios a07 update. it is a very sensitive topic, as many people state that their pcs have absolutely no temperature problems, so you might have just opened pandora's box right there.

I can tell you what i did to help me with this problem, as my games were getting slower as well, and in my case the pc was getting unbearably hot after half an hour of gameplay.

In my case, all i needed to do was to lift the pc up a bit @ the back, the kind of tilt that a 9 cell battery would offer (unfortunately i didnt have a 9 cell so i just put a couple of thin books under it).

this made all the difference. gave space under the pc for the vents to blow the hot air out and the game does not slow down nor does the pc overheat at all. and i can play for hours.

    Hope that helps.

i didnt read ur problem was heat mainly , wel lthese laptops are HOT i dont care who u speak to iv owned every type of laptop under the son and except the full on gaming desktop replacements these are seriously hot machines

i hate it for that reason alone, if u can bare it fine but i for one hate the excess power consumption which is wasted unless u are gaming ,

the main reason i have found is the ridiculous hinge arrangement at the back the screen covers the vent , what fool in design though that was a "funky" idea??? , idiot !

its a shame but there is literally nothing u can do about the machines power consumption and therefore wasted energy thats turned into heat which has to be expelled one way or another ...

try rmclock to control your voltages for any given multiplier it generally lowers machines by a great deal , on the cpu side , as far as i know there is very little u can do about the video cards heat output :(

otherwise its a half decent machine but oh how i long for the exact same components in a latitude shell :(

Thank you for the responses. I got the updates and a few others that Dell said I should get or "urgent". I know that all laptops are going to be warm and I never really have a problem with that because I try to prop it up and or not use it on my lap.

I just got worried that after playing the game the same way for a few days that it started to slow down and load slower. Didn't really know why. If it was the heat or updates or something else. But anyway I got the updates and will try it out for a while and see how it runs.

    Thanks again

Are you sure it would have made a difference if that vent wasn't half-covered??? As far as I can tell, most of the heat is at the front of the laptop anyway.

I sloved the problem by reverting to an older bios version: 1640_A08. Unfortunately I don't remember if that was the bios I had originally, but at this point I don't really care since it seems to work again. The Bios I had installed which slowed down my game (Dragon Age) was 1640_A14. After around 5 minutes the game would slow down so much that I could hardly do anything. I also think it's a good idea to create some air flow like mentioned above.
    hope this helps

The quick and easy way to check the BIOS:

Start, Run, dxdiag. First page, under BIOS.

Just in case you guys wanted to know.
