    hey guys I'm stuck :(

every time my XPS (L702x) enters sleep mode, I can't seem to resume the laptop. The power button light is flashing when I return to the laptop so I give it a quick press to resume. The fan starts and I can hear things happening, but the screen stays blank. If I try hitting the power button quickly again, I get a delayed beep.

I'm forced to hold the power button down to shut down the laptop and this is not good. Besides my security software forgetting it settings after this power down, I can only assume other bits of software are potentially being damaged as well.

Does anyone know why this is happening and/or have a fix?

    cheers

btw I have the 3D version... and now after reading something from another forum, I'm beginning to think this 3D model may have a problem with coming out of sleep with 120hz set as refresh rate :-/

I may have a similar issue to you Andy.My l702x suffers from black/blue screen crashes after I resume my system from sleep also sometimes after I've been using 3D on it.After the screen goes blank it stays that way for a minute or so and then reboots and gives me a minidump log.I've tried various tests and they've all resulted fine.
I do think it's an issue with 120 hz refresh and windows.Oh and I forgot to mention that after my crashes(I've had about 7 since I got my PC two months ago) I seem to lose some login cookies on certain web pages e.g twitter.I'm hoping this can be fixed as it's not good for a new PC.

It is a problem with the Nvidia display driver and the LCD running in 120Mhz mode. If you leave the LCD in 60Mhz mode, you won't have an issue. I have an open ticket with Nvidia. The problem only occurs after resuming from your FIRST standby/hibernation after a cold or warm boot.

If you run your LCD in 120Mhz and put the computer to sleep using driver v275.33, the computer will lock up before you ever see the login screen when you try to resume (NOTE: using v275.33 you can safely run in 60Mhz mode). However, if you use the v270.61 driver, you will be able to login after the first resume, but if you run any program that is listed in the "Manage 3D settings" (e.g. IE, Firefox, Windows Media Player etc..) the laptop will lock up at that point if running in 120Mhz.

However, I discovered a work around to the problem using v270.61. After you resume from the very FIRST standby/hibernation after a cold or warm boot, you are able to login. But before you run any programs, immediately put the computer back into standby. Then once you resume from that 2nd standby you are good to go until the next cold or warm boot.

Yes I've had similar findings with the drivers. The problem may continue though as it's been there with the last three Nvidia Driver final releases. The fact I paid for a 120hz capable screen I'd like to be able to use it,without issues.Lets hope this gets sorted soon.

I too have experienced this problem in the past. I have however, left the settings as is with the new Nvidia Drivers and 120Mhz refresh rate. When it happened it was usually only once and then there were no other problems.

thanks for the replies guys. I think we've narrowed down the culprit here. I'm going to put a ticket in with nvidia aswell, I guess the more they have with the issue, the better chance of it getting noticed.

For now though I've knocked my refresh rate down to 60mhz, which makes no different what so ever to normal use. I always have 3D turned off during normal use anyway so I'll turn that back on and RR back to 120hz when I want to use 3D

Eventually I get a loud beep sound that repeats every 10-15 seconds or so. The worst part is the problem is repeatable, it will do it every single time the computer goes to sleep. Exact same problem, put it down for about an hour lid still up,came back pressed power button got the windows resuming message. The screen came up normal as if it was going to restart, then went black and started to emit one beep around every 10 seconds.Board is a B3 revision.Manual points to possible board failure.Anyone else having this problem. No reformat or reinstall done it's as it came.

Can you please provide the link to your ticket? I found this problem after a dozen crashes... my HDD must be aching... nvidia is a mess!

    Best regards,

Hello everybody, I also had this problem on my L702X and yes it does appear to be an issue with Nvidia drivers and 120 Hz refresh rate as it hasn't happened to me on others.

Until Nvidia issues a proper driver that fully supports 120 Hz, a quick workaround I use is to just use password on resuming from standby, then before pressing the power button to resume, hold a printable key on the keyboard (such as the spacebar) and then press the power button to resume.

The trick is to get something to print in the password entry field before (or at the same time as) the screen lighting up. Yes there may be a few characters to clear from the password entry field later but it's worked for me every time ;)

    Regards,
    Yuzree
