I ordered my Xps 15 today and it should be here in a week or so. It has i5 processor, 1080p screen, 4gb ram, 500 gb hard drive. Got microsoft home and student(college student), and also 15 month virus protection and a recovery cd.
Im not very experienced with laptops so once i get my laptop what should I do. What bloatware should i remove, what should I do to make my xps run at full potential and at full speed? Also how should I go about the recovery cd?

it's really up to you. i usually do a clean install on any new laptop since i never use any of the programs that dell has on the laptops. but its kindof a hassle having to reinstall drivers and games.
if you're not sure, i would just go through msconfig and modify wat programs will run at startup. this will allow you to keep the bloatware but not have them run in the background so your laptop can run at full speed. then just use your laptop for a few weeks and look at whatprograms you haave installed. if you don't use it ever, uninstall. -
Did you get McAfee Virus protection on it? If so, remove that...
And, download MSE for your AV
It's good light, reliable program. And you can just use windows builtin firewall (if you want).
You can get your recovery cd here: Dell - Support -
So i paid for the 15 month mcafee virus protection... should i cancel that?? I mean i know the order has not shipped out yet because i have to confirm the order through my credit card company first before dell can ship the item
Why should i not get the McAfee virus protection?? Whats wrong with it? -
If your order is in production, you prolly would not be able to cancel it.
AV software, is always based on user opinions (as most things are), and I don't want to "sway" you from McAfee if it's something you want to use/try out. You can always try it out & if it doesn't work remove it and try something else.
If you are looking forward to receiving your lappy, don't cancel because of McAfee, that would just delay the shipment even further..IMHO. -
Well i have not confirmed through the credit card company yet so i know it has not shipped yet. It really does not matter which virus protection i use as long as it gets the job done and does not slow down my computer. So i think i could still cancel the mcafee without canceling my order i think. I have read some other reviews now and it seems that mcafee is not really liked by quite a few people. I save 40 bucks if i cancel the virus protection just hope it does not back up my order to far

Well i think i will give McAfee a try, if it bogs down my comp or always pulls up them popups while im trying to do something then i will delete it. But i have old laptops here at the house so I prob wont even be able to tell if the computer is acting slower than normal

Actually called and told them to take the Mcafee subscription off but it will still be on the comp. How do i fully remove it??

As stated Microsoft Security Essentials is much better.
I use:
Avira - free - easily switched off if necessary
Microsoft Security Essentials - free
Malwarebytes - free (manual) or paid - the paid version has active protection and allows scheduling - easily switched off if necessary -
I use Avast, which is also free and less intrusive than McAfee. But, I'm interested in the Microsoft program. -

I think you will like it(or I hope)
