Whenever my laptop is on a flat service such as a desk I get incredible vibration and distortion from what seems to be the subwoofer in front, even at low volumes. Is this normal? Seems kind of silly...

I had this problem (or I believe so). It seemed as though something was rattling or the speakers were bottoming out. Upgrading the BIOS solved it for me. Have you upgraded to A05 BIOS on the 1645 or A12 on 1640? That's what solved the problem to me.
