So i'm in a bind right now  . I had to swap out my old keyboard on my Dell XPS l701x. Everything went fine but for the back light connector was broken / lost in the process. Dell doesn't sell the part and i can't seem to find anyway to put the ribbon onto the motherboard. Dell offered to replace the logic board and do that but i really don't see the point in that if i don't have to do it.

I'm hoping maybe someone can help me out and keep me from telling dell to come out and replace a motherboard just to have my keyboards back light working again.

Thanks for any help, answers, or guidance on this issue, now lets find some cookies! :D

If the connector on the mobo is shot, really there isn't much you can do aside from a mobo swap.

Dell offering to replace the logic board because of a non certified user working on his laptop? This company rocks.

I think your only option would be to order the part from somewhere else and solder. I learned soldering in high school and have the equipment, but I think that job would make me nervous without better training. Maybe an electronics repair shop could do it?

Will Dell have someone come to you? If you don't have to mail your computer in for repair I would just let them replace it. Back-lit keyboards are too cool! Buy your own thermal paste and get a re-paste while you are at it! Just make sure you know how to do it so you can tell him how to apply it.

Are you talking about the ZIF connector on the motherboard? Surprised Dell would replace the part due to a non-technician doing the swap..

Those connectors are so small, I wouldn't want to try to solder anything to a motherboard these days...the pins are too dang tiny!

Sorry to bump an old thread but I have exactly the same problem. Were you able to find a solution? It's the latch from the connector not the connector itself. I'd really like to fix this problem, I've not had the laptop long.

DELL XPS M1730 Backlight Keyboard Connector broken , I have found that it had been broken when I removed the keyboard and I tried to fix it ... I am keeping to find the right pin connection if someone WHO has the same laptop can show me the rigt connection ... I want to thank him/her from now... [IMG]

    retainer clip had been broken

The green copper conductive road at the Left Upper Corner had been torn away... I counted 8 connections... [IMG]

I soldered with two wires and connected them to keyboard but the ligts did not work but when I externally connected the keyboard the light turned on ... When I hit " Fn+ right scroll " and measure with Voltmeter the I read nearly 8 Volts but the lights did not work...

But I still get the Error Code 0411 --- keyboard backlight cable not detected

But I think if I could find the right connections it would have worked ...

    Backlight keyboard is off...

is now lightening... it Works but there is something missing ... Cable detection is not yet passed...

I soldered 4 cables and... Blue cable is +12V (must be connected to keyboard "+" cable )and Orange cable (must be connected to keyboard negative cabel) [IMG]
In order to BIOS detect keyboard backlight cable U have to connect White and Black Cables ... [IMG]
As U can see the cables come from backlight is connected to blue and orange cables ...
